Everyone has times where they feel like they’re suffocating and like every possible thing in their life is going wrong, where they are so stressed and overwhelmed that they feel as if their world is falling around them, and where even the tiniest things are upsetting to them, but, at risk of being cliché, you have to walk through the tunnel before you can see the light at the other side. Not a single person can be perfectly happy all the time—that’s just a part of being human and having thoughts and feelings.
Here are 5 things to do and 5 quotes to remember in order to help you get there:
1. Focus on you.
This can be difficult to do when you have ten million other things to get done, but if I’ve learned anything this semester, it’s that nothing you accomplish matters if your mental health is suffering because of it. Focus on what makes you happy. If that means taking a bubble bath, going for a run, stuffing your face with junk food and watching your favorite movie, or listening to your favorite song on repeat, then take the time to do it. You won’t be productive if you’re riddled with anxiety, sleep-deprived or depressed. Love yourself.
2. Accept that you cannot control everything.
This is one of the most difficult things I have had to come to accept, but I’ve discovered it is fundamental to maintaining happiness. You can’t control the state of the economy and whether you keep your job. You can’t control having three tests on the same day, and you can’t control other people’s actions. There are so many factors that you can’t control and you will encounter countless circumstances and situations in your life like these. All you can do is face them head on and do your best to jump the hurdle.
3. Think about all the good things you have in your life.
When things have been going wrong for you for what feels like forever, it’s easy to focus on the negative things. Don’t forget to remember how fortunate you are for all of the great things and great people you have.
4. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone.
If you’re fortunate to have a fantastic support system at your back like I am, reach out to them. Tell them you’re struggling and ask them for advice. Getting a fresh opinion on the problem(s) you’re facing may work in your favor, and if they can’t offer up advice, at least you have someone to lean on while you figure things out.
5. Remind yourself that even though it doesn’t feel okay right now, it will be okay.
It’s easier said than done to look past all the terrible things that are getting you down and to focus on the bigger picture, but you’ll be better for it if you can do it! Don’t forget that the sun will rise every morning regardless of whether you decide to rise with it, so accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what could be.
