5 Things That I Wish I Knew For My Freshman Year Of College

If you're anything like a normal high school senior then you expect your freshman year in college to go perfectly. I hate to break it to you, but your freshman year in college will be filled with highs and lows. (Hopefully it will mainly be highs!) There are a few things that are inevitably going to happen during your freshman year of college and when they do, don't freak out. I promise you, they happen to everyone and are completely normal.

1. You will get homesick.

No matter how many summers you've spent away from being home, never missing your home, I promise you that you will get homesick. College is stressful and exhausting and, after a long day of classes and a ton of homework, all you are going to want is a home cooked meal and a comfortable bed. Instead, after a long day of classes and a ton of homework, you are stuck with bad dining hall food and a twin size bed. I promise you that it's normal to be homesick, everyone is experiencing it!

2. You will most likely gain a few pounds.

Most freshmen go into it optimistically and thinking that the freshman fifteen won't hit them. They believe that they will go to the gym every day and stay in tip top shape. Well, I hate to break it to you, but you most likely are going to gain a few pounds. Going to the gym after a long day of classes is something that nobody wants to do and it is okay to skip the gym a few times, everyone does. I also can promise you that the soft serve ice cream machine will be calling your name every day. You will gain a few pounds. Don't sweat it, it happens to everyone.

3. You will meet some awful people.

Everyone says that you meet your best friends in college, but that doesn't mean that the first people who you meet during orientation are going to be your best friends. Some people won't like you and that is okay! Just because a few people don't like you doesn't mean that everyone doesn't like you. Meeting your best friends takes time, but it will happen.

4. You will fail a test that you studied an endless amount of hours for.

It happens. You think that you studied everything that could possibly be on the exam, but you were wrong and your professor tricks you. Don't worry about it! Your first few exams in college are the hardest because you are adjusting to college level exams. Don't beat yourself up about failing one exam. Instead, gain motivation to work even harder while preparing for the next.

5. You will have the best year of your life.

Freshman year in college is about discovering yourself and learning to live in a completely new environment with entirely new people. Your freshman year of college is not always what you expect it to be, but, in the end, no experience will ever match it. You are going to meet some awesome people, but you are also going to meet some awful people. You are going to get homesick and you're also going to be happy you're away from home. You're going to gain a few pounds and you're also going to love every bite of that ice cream. You're going to study a ton and you may fail, but you're also going to do great on many assignments. Freshman year is filled with highs and lows, but make sure to always remember those highs because no other year compares to freshman year!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
