The day I have been waiting for finally arrived: the release of Paul Feig's take on everyone's rag-tag team of ghost hunters. I have been waiting for this movie since they announced it last summer. I could not wait to see my favorite females kick butt, take no prisoners and have a good time on the silver screen. I couldn't even wait until its actual premiere day -- I saw it at one of those late night pre-screenings the day before.

Now, unlike everyone else, I went in there with a sense of optimism. I did not intend for it to be up to the glory of the original film; that is too much of a burden to put on a film. What I did expect was that it was going to be a fun summer comedy with some awesome female comedians at the helm, and it was exactly that. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and I just can't understand why everyone was so extremely negative about it before it was even released. It was not terrible. Was it the best film I've ever seen? Of course not. Again, I did not expect it to be. There were some things I didn't care for, but nothing I can possibly use to classify it as the worst movie ever. This is why this article is not a movie review, it is simply a short list of what I liked and didn't like. They are simply my opinions, and not something you should take to heart. I really encourage you all to give the movie a chance this weekend, it might surprise you.

What I Liked:

1. The friendship dynamic

What I really dug about this movie is the relationship among the heroines. Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig are good friends in real life, and it really showed throughout the movie. They are four completely different women with their own personalities, yet they support, love and care about one another. I am sick and tired of seeing women tear each other down. It was refreshing to see a real friendship among strong females portrayed in a film.

2. The cameos

The appearances of the original cast members in the film were brilliant, and did not crowd or slow down the plot at all, which is what I was worried about. Warning, I am giving away spoilers throughout this whole article, so if you haven't seen the film yet, STOP READING. Bill Murray appears a skeptic who openly bashes the ghostbusters and their work. Dan Aykroyd is a taxi driver who hilariously refuses a ride to Kristen Wiig's character. Annie Potts was a desk clerk at the Mercado Hotel, and was still as sarcastic and feisty as ever. Ernie Hudson was Leslie Jones' uncle, who owns a funeral home and the hearse that eventually becomes the famous car. Sigourney Weaver was Jillian Holtzmann's (Kate McKinnon's) mentor, and now I want a buddy movie featuring the both of them because it was fantastic. My favorite though was of course was Slimer, because well, he's Slimer.

3. The real science

Paul Feig actually hired real scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help him make the science in the film as plausible as possible. I felt as though the film really embraced the love of science and portrayed it as a very positive thing. I am very excited about that, because I truly believe more people, especially kids, should be interested in science.

4. Action scenes

Funny women kicking butt and taking names, what could be better than that?

5. Kate Motherflippin McKinnon

Can I marry this woman? I'll admit I am a bit biased because I've been a fan of Kate since her stint on "The Big Gay Sketch Show." That being said, it is so extremely difficult not to fall in love with her in this film. Jillian Holtzmann is so weird, but in such an endearing way. What I love so much about Kate's comedy is that it isn't always about the joke. With Kate, the funny comes from her character. She isn't just a comedian telling another joke, she truly sells her character in a way where the crazy, hilarious things she says or does are so natural. I can say without a doubt that she is what I enjoyed the most from this movie. It is because of her that I will forever refer to Pringles as "salty parabolas." Thank you McKinnon, for just being yourself.

What I Didn't Like:

1. Chris Hemsworth

I know, I know. How can I dislike the beautiful human being that is Chris Hemsworth? It isn't him, it is just his character. Dimwitted secretary Kevin just didn't resonate with me. They even tried to give him a little character arc, he just wanted to be a ghostbuster so bad that he made his own suit and everything. It just wasn't enough for me, if you are going to make him a doofus, at least make him a compelling doofus. He did have some good moments though, I almost fell out of my seat when he talked about bringing his dog, named Mike Hat but pronounced like "My Cat," to work him.

2. The villain

The main conflict in the film is the ghostbusters figuring out who is making the special devices that summon ghosts and placing them around New York City. The criminal mastermind behind this is Rowan. Rowan is a nut job. He is obsessed with everything and anything occult and believes that the human world needs a "cleansing." I'm not joking, that is exactly what he said in the film. He even kills himself so he can come back as a ghost and lead an army of the undead. My issue with Rowan was that his character was whiny, self entitled and so irritating that I wanted to leap through the screen and punch him in the face. And the build up to him being the villain was not great, it was just like "Hey, here is the crazy bad guy."

3. Overused humor

I enjoyed a lot of the comedy in the movie, but not all of the jokes made me laugh. My favorite type of comedy is based in characterization. If it is a comedian being a comedian and just telling jokes, then it isn't really funny to me and it is kind of boring really.

4. Overcompensating scary scenes

There were some scenes in this movie that probably could give me nightmares, like the confrontation between Leslie Jones and the mannequin. While I appreciated the scary, more advanced looking ghosts, I don't think they needed to rely on them so much. It is a comedy, so let it just be funny.

5. The blatant raunchiness

The great thing about the original is that adult humor was subtle enough where kids would have no clue about it. In this movie, there was a couple of instances where I kind of shuddered at young children watching in the theater. It is rated PG-13, but still. Little eyes are watching. I'm all for offensive, uncensored humor, but when it is used for no other reason but to get cheap laughs, it makes no sense.
