5 Things Every Freshman Needs To Know About Syllabus Week
The College Tourist

The first week of classes at college can be quite intimidating, especially for a freshman. I remember back to my first week as a freshman and I was completely lost in how to handle it all. My first mistake was not realizing I had to start studying and putting a lot of time into my college work. I expected"sylly" week to be quite easy, but don't make the same mistake I did.

1. Don't go out every night

Everyone says that the first week of classes is a breeze; you just go over the syllabus in every class. While this may be true for some, it isn't for most. Most of the time, you spend half a class going over the syllabus and then you dive right into classwork.

Most freshmen don't realize this, and they decide to go out every night instead. That is a super big mistake, especially when you have those early morning classes. It's mostly a mistake because you'll wake up exhausted for your new classes. Don't give your professors a bad first impression of you.

2. Hit the library ASAP

As I said earlier, you might think it's just a chill week like I did and that you don't have to actually start working. If you do think this, you are sadly mistaken. It is SO important to start going to the library, keeping up with homework and studying now because you will get on top of your work, if not ahead. Regardless, it is so important to keep up with your work instead of getting behind!

3. Make time to meet people

If you are one of those people who gets super stressed and anxious about your first week of classes and trying to manage everything in your school life, this tip is super important for you! It can be hard to try and manage your time around school since everything is new, but you have to remember that you should set aside some time to meet people.

Whether this is in your classes or on your way to class or anything in between, make sure you introduce yourself and make some new friends for the rest of the year.

4. Take the time to relax and breathe

As I just said, it can be stressful and difficult to make time for other things and activities during the first week of classes because you're so stressed out. Instead of burning yourself out, make sure you take some time for yourself to sit back and relax. You won't be able to get anything done in school if you don't take some time to breathe.

5. Participate in on-campus activities

During the first week especially, there are plenty of activities going on around campus for freshmen to get better acclimated to the school. I highly recommend going to participate in these activities because it will give you time to get away from classes, meet people and get some awesome first-year experiences on campus that you wouldn't get any other time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
