If you were alive on Monday night, you probably watched the first Presidential Debate, or didn't, for fear that it would be as horrible as you imagined (and that one of these people are actually going to run our country in two months). The debate for the most part, was what it was expected to be. Trump made some ridiculous claim that he got from some report he "just read", Clinton stood and smiled at him while having some previously thought-out comeback. Personally, Clinton would most definitely be the more tolerable president. She's efficient, and has had more experience in politics than Trump has, and it shows. On the contrary, Trump did make a few remarks that were true to fact (such as NAFTA being one of the worst trade deals made in the U.S). If you missed the debate, this is a list of everything both candidates did wrong Monday night.
1. "Manterrupted"
It was estimated that Trump "manterrupted" Clinton about 40 times during that election. Not to mention the number of times he interrupted Lester Holt, the host of the debate.
2. Wait, could you repeat the question?
Trump did not answer the questions directly. Particularly about jobs; when asked, he started talking about how Mexico kept taking their jobs because of plants. Never did he say what exactly he would do about jobs, except the idea of making everyone have a corporate job.
3. Sit Still, Look Pretty (but also say a witty comeback that will put him in his place)
Clinton stood there and smiled- probably used to having men talking over her in a male dominated field. She made remarks that were funny, but sounded like she spent hours thinking of every witty comeback to make a fool out of Trump (which I'm sure not many are opposed to)
4. Apparently Trump's a Comedian
Trump's claims were just plain comedic. Some of my favorites were "Airplanes here in the United States look like third-world countries" (how privileged do you need to be?), and, to Hillary, "She is very temperamental, I however can keep my temperament." This one was also just so hysterical to everyone watching because temperament is literally what Trump is known for. And obviously the line of Trump accusing Hillary to have "been fighting the Islamic State for her entire adult life."
5. The Achilles Heel
Unforgettably, the email scandal and tax return issue. Everyone was bumping on Trump for not releasing his tax returns, and he responded for a while saying he will release them "against his lawyer's advice". But later he stated that he'd "release his tax returns when she [Hillary Clinton] will release her emails". Obviously this caused a lot of controversy between the two, and the question still remains- will either of them release their weak spot for this election?
The candidates both did some things wrong - but hey, it was the first debate; I'm sure the next ones will be much more entertaining. A tip for watching the debate is to check out politifact.com for anything that you may think is not accurate. They evaluate throughout debates and events whether or not something a political figure says is true. They also made good remarks, for Clinton on her tax returns and jobs for the middle class, and Trump about our major continental debt and how he is planning to fix it. However, it is a tad strange to think about the fact that one of them will be our president in t-minus one month and seven days, so who's moving to Canada because I think they're about to have some major population growth after November 8th.
