The 5 Stages of Summer as Told by a College Student

For the past two semesters, we college students have slaved away doing homework, writing papers and taking exams. We have grown accustomed to living in close quarters and consuming food off of an assembly line. We eat, sleep and breathe college. Our university is our life. Summer is our time to press pause on that life.

Summer is the time for us to chill out and enjoy some quality time with home friends and family. However, many of us may have high expectations to which the summer may or may not deliver. Here are a few inevitable stages each of us will experience as these next three months progress.

1. Excitement.

Finally. Freedom has arrived. Showers without flip-flops are so close you can practically smell them. You can kiss your double life as a library hermit goodbye and say hello to those rays of sunshine. Finals just ended for the year, and you are more than ready to head back to your old stomping grounds and bask in home cooked meals, friends and all of the free time in the world. You won't have to face library PTSD until next semester.

2. Delusion.

You are ready. You are invincible. You are going to do it all. Road trip across the country? Check. Swing on ropes and jump into lakes? Check. Lounge all day on a boat in a bathing suit and get the best tan? Also check. You have already made up your mind that you and your friends are going to make this the best summer yet. Over these three short months, you are going to see and do it everything on your bucket list. There is a 95.8% chance that this will not happen). A return home comes with the return of rules and limited independence. Alas, you are most likely stuck behind a desk at work, filing papers and wishing your company was Dunder Mifflin. The closest you may get to fulfilling your bucket list goals is day tripping to the beach with friends or tanning poolside.

3. Wanderlust.

Upon your departure from your university, you most likely made promises to each and every one of your geographically close friends that you will visit them this summer. Soon after arriving home, you realized that, unlike on campus, nothing is within walking distance. This requires use of transportation. Use of transportation requires gas. Gas requires money -- a necessity that the average broke college student does not possess enough of. You plan out road trips to destinations far and wide. In reality, you probably do visit a handful of friends, but your exploring days as Christopher Columbus are short-lived due to lack of money and sense of direction.

4. Netflix.

Hello again, old friend. It has reached that point in the summer where all home friends are on vacation or at work and the gym seems like too unwelcoming of a place. Thus, you welcome Netflix binges into your life with arms open wide. The addiction is real. Netflix only gives you 15 seconds between episodes to decide what to do with your life for the day. That is more than enough time to safely conclude that watching one more episode of House of Cards is more productive than going through the boxes of college paraphernalia that are most likely still cluttering your garage since the day you returned home.

5. Impatience.

By now, the summer is drawing to a close. Some of your home friends may have already returned to their colleges while others are busy packing and preparing to return to theirs. The days at home have been some much need R&R, but you're itching to go back to an independent lifestyle and communal living. Who knew life at home could be so boring? The chaos of campus is calling your name as you lounge around and watch the final episode of your fourth Netflix series binge. You miss your college friends, going out and late night pizza.

The sooner move-in day gets here, the better. You are ready to start a new semester and wreak some havoc with your best friends. Don't worry, this impatient boredom is only temporary. Soon you will be back in the swing of things and this summer cycle will repeat itself all over again, next year.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
