For the past two semesters, we college students have slaved away doing homework, writing papers and taking exams. We have grown accustomed to living in close quarters and consuming food off of an assembly line. We eat, sleep and breathe college. Our university is our life. Summer is our time to press pause on that life.
Summer is the time for us to chill out and enjoy some quality time with home friends and family. However, many of us may have high expectations to which the summer may or may not deliver. Here are a few inevitable stages each of us will experience as these next three months progress.
1. Excitement.
2. Delusion.
3. Wanderlust.
Upon your departure from your university, you most likely made promises to each and every one of your geographically close friends that you will visit them this summer. Soon after arriving home, you realized that, unlike on campus, nothing is within walking distance. This requires use of transportation. Use of transportation requires gas. Gas requires money -- a necessity that the average broke college student does not possess enough of. You plan out road trips to destinations far and wide. In reality, you probably do visit a handful of friends, but your exploring days as Christopher Columbus are short-lived due to lack of money and sense of direction.
4. Netflix.
Hello again, old friend. It has reached that point in the summer where all home friends are on vacation or at work and the gym seems like too unwelcoming of a place. Thus, you welcome Netflix binges into your life with arms open wide. The addiction is real. Netflix only gives you 15 seconds between episodes to decide what to do with your life for the day. That is more than enough time to safely conclude that watching one more episode of House of Cards is more productive than going through the boxes of college paraphernalia that are most likely still cluttering your garage since the day you returned home.
5. Impatience.
By now, the summer is drawing to a close. Some of your home friends may have already returned to their colleges while others are busy packing and preparing to return to theirs. The days at home have been some much need R&R, but you're itching to go back to an independent lifestyle and communal living. Who knew life at home could be so boring? The chaos of campus is calling your name as you lounge around and watch the final episode of your fourth Netflix series binge. You miss your college friends, going out and late night pizza.
The sooner move-in day gets here, the better. You are ready to start a new semester and wreak some havoc with your best friends. Don't worry, this impatient boredom is only temporary. Soon you will be back in the swing of things and this summer cycle will repeat itself all over again, next year.
