Airports suck. It's just a fact of life.

The airport never fails to always suck. I learned that first hand during my first plane trip alone. However, I turned it into a learning experience and came out of it with 5 things to make it all a little easier.

1. Get to the airport early

Getting there too early is never an issue. If you get through security and get to your gate and still have time left over consider it a win. There are usually cool shops and restaurants that will help you kill time.

2. Schedule a long layover if you have to catch a connecting flight

Nothing sucks more than running through the airport with 10 minutes to get to a gate that feels like its clear across the state. A long layover will give you time to eat, find your gate, and be able to charge your devices before the next flight.

3. If you want to upgrade your seat, It is cheaper to do it at the airport before the flight

Upgrades will be cheaper in the airport the day of the flight. They want to fill those seats before the flight leaves and they will lower the prices to do so.

4. Double and triple check your gate number

The airlines will change them frequently and sometimes without warning. There will be monitors in the airport for you to check the most recent gate the flights were assigned.

5. Window seats are the best seats... if you don't have to pee on the plane

Window seats always have a little bit more room on the side where the window is because of the shape of the plane. You won't get bumped by anyone in the aisle and you aren't going to be smashed between two people who probably smell. However, if you have to pee then it is a hassle to get out of your seat and then back in.\

Moral of these flight tips is to be prepared because airports are always a headache.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
