There are countless facts about the good old state of Michigan, but if you're a Michigander like me, I'm sure you can agree with one or all of the following things that are common to our state.
1. Our hands are our maps.
If you ask a Michigander where they are from, and you're not familiar with it, you can bet that they'll show you with their hand map. It is one of the most convenient things about being from Michigan. You can whip it out whenever, wherever. You're lying if you say you haven't done it before.2. If you don't know how to play Euchre, are you really from Michigan?
This game is a classic pastime here in Michigan. It's a game that all ages can play -- both young and old. You can find it at a family gathering or any other kind of function with friends. It can get super competitive rather quickly, so beware. A norm while playing this game is having a wonderful hand like the one pictured above and your partner calling hearts as trump. Isn't that the worst? It happens to the best of us.
3. Opening Day is pretty much its own holiday.
When it's Opening Day, you can guarantee that 80 percent of all the schools' population will be out before the crack of dawn in their camouflage sitting in their tree stands. Some schools even shut down for a couple days. Hunting around here is a lifestyle. Bucks are the prized possessions around here. You can find them hanging from a tree or mounted on the wall in the living room. You can also bet good money that everyone you know or at least a relative of theirs has hit one in their lifetime.
4. Michigan or Michigan State?
Let's face it, this long-running rivalry has ended friendships and relationships more than any other thing I can think of. This is one of the most controversial, important, and most daunting questions Michiganders ask one another. You get judged based upon your answer and it makes for one heck of a game day whether it's football or any other sport. One thing both sides can agree on is their mutual dislike for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
5. Potholes are abundant.
These things are everywhere! Michigan is known for its terrible roads, its endless amounts of construction, and these little buggers. A newly paved road is a rarity around here. Theses potholes sneak up on you, hurt your tires, your car, and rattle your teeth. You try to avoid one and run into another one. It is an impossible feat. They can make for one rocky ride.
No matter if you love Michigan, Michigan State, hunt, fish, or are good at Euchre, we are all proud of our little mitten state.
