Coming to college, the most commonly asked question is where are you from? For many students this is a simple answer. At the University of Florida, almost everybody you meet is from Florida and apparently every Florida resident knows the state like the back of their hand. However, for an out-of-stater, this is a difficult question to answer. See if you are not from Florida many people ask you if you are from New York City or Long Island. So how do I explain to people in a brief conversation that I am from a town called Bucks County which is 45 minutes from Philly, 2 hours from NYC and 25 minutes from Princeton. That’s a mouthful right? While my hometown is not well known to those outside of Pennsylvania, it definitely has defining attributes that can give people a sense of where I am from. So, next time you need to explain Bucks County, here are some ways you can elaborate…

1. Oishi and KO are your favorite restaurants.

It can be any day of the week and Oishi and KO will always be amazing options. You go on vacation and come back craving Oishi or KO. Since they are basically the same restaurant, you go to whichever one has less of a wait. On the weekends, you order take-out from Oishi and KO. You walk in and John at the front desk knows you.

2. David Witchell is your go-to hair salon.

Located right on State Street is David J. Witchell Salon. If you need to book an appointment for a school dance or prom, you must do so MONTHS (and I really mean MONTHS) in advance. You cannot go to David Witchell without seeing at least one person you know. If you are a true supporter, you also go to the Lahaska location and bounce between the two. When you want your hair or makeup done you have YOUR person, and yes, everyone has a different person.

3. You shop at Luna Chick and follow their Instagram.

There are not many stores in Bucks County that cater to young adult fashion successfully. So, if you want THE trending clothes of the time, you go to Luna Chick. You walk in and are known by all of the employees. If you are a true supporter, you follow the Instagram and screenshot your favorite outfits.

4. You love to go to the Farmers Market.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are truly the greatest days of the week. If you go to Council Rock North, you can walk right over to the farmers market. The farmers market has EVERY type of food. You can get sushi, soft pretzels, milkshakes and Mexican. What’s not to love?

5. You are a member of the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC)

If your anybody who is anybody, you have a membership at the NAC. You can be walking through the halls of high school and hear people asking if they want to go to the NAC after school. The question is: is the NAC really a gym or a social spot? The NAC, and now NAC pool, is easily the faciest place in Bucks County. (For those of you who do not know, to be “facy” is to go places because everyone else is there. You are simply “showing face.”)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
