Is reading something of the past? Is our generation too addicted to Netflix to pick up a book? Maybe you had a similar experience, but when I was a little girl I remember special trips to the library with my Mom to pick out new books. She would always say, "You've got to have a pleasure book for the pool!" And I agree! It's a shame that we are attached to our TV sets. Here are some benefits of pleasure reading:
1. It's Relaxing
There's something about reading that it so peaceful. Maybe it's the fact that it's a way of escaping reality... or maybe it's that mostly when we read we are sitting or laying down. Whatever it is, I can guarantee you that reading a book that YOU picked out and YOU want to read, will be a completely relaxing experience. Try this new stress reliever!
2. Activates Your Mind
Reading is great for your mental health. Yes, reading activates your mind! Diving into a captivating novel exercises your brain. Think about it, while you read your mind is filled with images and emotions.
3. Way Better Than Netflix
Yes, reading requires more effort than watching Netflix... but when you cannot put that book down because you just HAVE to see what happens... it's totally worth it! I'm sure you've heard people tell you that the book was WAY better than the movie. This is because something exists in reading that doesn't necessarily exist in watching television; that is your IMAGINATION. You get to picture the story, completely unique to you.
4. You can read anywhere!
Okay, obviously I don't support reading while you are driving or trying to manage any other potentially dangerous task... but guess what? You don't have to have wifi to read your favorite books! So take it to the beach or on your hike or vacation. The world is your oyster!
5. Not Insanely Costly
It's no secret that there's no monthly subscription to reading books... so take advantage of it! There are lots of ways to get your favorite reads for cheap. (Half-priced books, your school library, a public library, etc.) Don't know what to read? Ask your friends to borrow some of their books! It's a simple concept, but fairly cheap entertainment is a sweet reward.
All in all, it's not too late to revive reading for pleasure. So think twice the next time you click the Netflix button on your TV remote!
