During my time in high school, I've centered myself around getting involved in my school. Through different service trips and leadership retreats I've met the most incredible people in the world. The only problem is some of them live hundreds of miles away. The friends that mean the most will always find a way to stay in your life. While the ones you were supposed to meet just that one time, will never be seen again. Regardless, long distance friends are the best to have! Here are 5 reasons why:
1. You always have a place to stay when you visit them.
My out-of-state best friend lives in Hewitt, New Jersey, Louisiana which is about an hour outside of New York City! Talk about lucky!! He come down to visit me once and it's now my turn to go up to the big apple and see my best friend! Whenever you have a friend who lives in a different state or city, you know whenever you're in town, you're more than welcome to stay at their house because they couldn't bare to let you stay in a sad hotel room without them! There's always a place for you on their couch and in their hearts!
2. You can culture each other based on your cities.
I learn something new from my best friend everyday. He shows me new perspectives on life, he shows me new bands, he even shows me cool places to get books and clothes. By the influence of our cities, there is so much we can teach each other. There are new things all the time. When I find something cool that I know he will like, I get so excited because he always has something new to show me or talk to me about in return.
3. The conversations never get boring.
Since you don't see each other every day, there is so much to share whenever you get to talk on the phone or Skype! You can always stay up to date on their school's drama and even what's going on with their siblings. You will always know that you can't ever really have a "quick" conversation with them because there's just so much to talk about. Even when there is silence on both ends, that doesn't mean you're ready to go. You're just trying to rack your brain for more things to say.
4. You can never take too many pictures when you're together.
Being together in very short increments, means you need take pictures looking horrendous, and maybe even those dumb videos of your best friend laughing hysterically. Looking in my camera roll, there are so many videos and photos that make me want to curl up into a ball and fly to New York to see my best friend. But, the pictures I do have are ones that we will always cherish. Pictures and videos are such great things to have in a long distance friendship so your friends don't forget the real you.
5. It's never a good-bye, it's a see you later.
During all of these retreats and service trips, when the time came to return to our schools/homes, we always knew it to be a see you later instead of good-bye! Saying good-bye sounds like you won't ever see your long distance buddy, Which isn't true at all! The first time someone told me that, I thought they were just trying to make me feel better. Meeting my best friend from New York only a year ago, I've seen him 4 times since then! Which is a lot considering the distance. It's never a good-bye with your long distanced bestie!
