5 Reasons Why Being Sick at School is the Absolute Worst

Being away from home can be really hard at times, especially when you are sick. Living at school and getting sick is tough for so many reasons. Here are just a few reasons as to why getting sick at school is the absolute worse.

1. You don't have your mom there to take care of you.

Honestly, if you say that you don't want your mom there to take care of you when you're sick, you are most likely lying through your teeth. The best thing in the world is being cuddled up, in your own bed, with your mom making you soup and checking in to make sure you aren't ACTUALLY dying (even though you may feel like you are).

2. You are surrounded by other sick people.

If your school is like mine, an illness usually does not stay quarantined to one person or one area. Usually it ravages its way throughout all of campus and infects most of its inhabitants. Sometimes you may get lucky and avoid getting it, but if you're anything like me you are usually one of the first to get sick and one of the last to get over the cold.

3. Because you are surrounded by other sick people, you usually get sick more than once before finally getting healthy.

Let's be honest, getting sick at school is a vicious cycle. One day you are perfectly healthy and then the next week you are dying in your bed. After that you get healthy for maybe another week and then fall sick once again.

4. You end up running out of supplies and then being too sick to want to go get more for yourself so you sit and suffer.

Having to adult is hard. I hate doing, and I'm sure most other college students do the same. If your dorm is far from a store or you have to go off campus to get medicine and food, you might just opt to lay in bed and suffer.

5. Health Services is usually the absolute worst place to go when you are sick.

One would think that because they are the "Health Services" that they'd actually be able to help you when you are sick. However, most of the time they are the most useless people on campus. I know that here, the health service department is better known for yelling at you for not having a thermometer in your room and making you worse than you already are.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
