Whether you take the plunge or move down here for college, the South is a foreign land for us true New Englanders. We tend to stick out in shorts when it reaches 60 degrees here, but we can’t see that changing anytime soon. We’ve made the move and we can't help but ask…
1. What’s it like to have a majority of losing sports teams?
That’s right. The first question wouldn't be spoken by a New Englander if it wasn't cocky and a bit offensive. But it's true. Our sports pride has us writing in Tom Brady for president while everyone around stares at our patriots jerseys with a burning hate. So, as true New Englanders, we ask the question we KNOW will piss them off.
2. What the heck is a Winn Dixie?
…. Or a Publix. Or a Wawa. Or whatever the rest of these supermarkets are that dot the southern USA. Stop and Shop has been our go to for quite some time but we can most likely make the switch. That doesn't mean I’m giving up my stop and shop rewards card, though.
3. Are you seriously not sweating right now?
Our winters begin whenever the hell they feel like it and that means showing its face maybe in September or maybe October. But the reality is we’ve never really seen a fall like this. We can't hide it. We miss our sweaters and our crazy beautiful fall leaves, so don't roll your eyes when you see us sitting with a pumpkin candle and a fan in our face.
4. What did you just call that rotary?
….And about 50 other things that somehow New England has found their own words for.
5. So winter doesn't cause for 5 months of shoveling, colds, frostbite, and an overall winter tundra?
And as soon as we ask that, we’re met with a smiling “Nope.” There are the days where we miss our trips to Boston, historic surroundings, cultural dining (Dunkins), and the mean streets of our small hometowns. There are days when I jump at the sound of “Cape Cod” or “the north shore” because it's like hearing home a bunch of times over. But coming down South definitely has its perks. We will adjust to the beautiful scenery, calm and sweet winters, and the smiling faces of those around us. We will always know who the true GOAT is but, sometimes down South won't be so bad.
