The great state of Pennsylvania may be known as the trucking capital of the world and/or the snacking capital of the world. Although it's not the worst thing in the world knowing you live just a short drive from Hershey's chocolate or UTZ pretzels and chips, it does require a balanced lifestyle. And with great food comes great beauty. When non-Pennsylvanians think of the nature aspect of PA, they automatically think of the Appalachian trail. Although they are not wrong, as the trail makes up a great part of history for the state, Pennsylvania has much more to offer. The lush landscaping, vast forests, and overall beautiful and untouched nature spots are a haven for many. That being said, this haven is not for all, but for some reason everyone loves waterfalls. It may not be possible for every one to fly to South America or anywhere else in the world and hike near waterfalls, but they can come to PA and have a similar experience.
1. Bushkill Falls, Bushkill Park
So Niagara Falls is great and all that, but why waste your time driving all the way up there when you can visit the "Niagara Falls of Pennsylvania" and have an equally enjoyable experience? The Pocono's are a great place to be in the summertime, there's boating, car racing, and hiking - and this waterfall is on the top of the list. This park has eight major falls, over which visitors can walk via bridges and along trails. Admission can be a bit pricey, but the views are absolutely worth it.
2. Cucumber Falls, Ohiopyle State Park
This 30 foot waterfall is one of dozens in Ohiopyle State Park. Visitors park near the top of the falls and then make a short trek downhill toward Cucumber Falls. From there, people have the ability to continue on other paths and trails throughout the park or stand along the riverbank of the Youghiogheny River and take in the scenery. Not in the mood for walking amongst the trees? Activities such as biking, fishing, camping, and white water rafting are also available to enjoy.
3. Raymondskill Falls, Delaware Water Gap
Bigger is better, especially in the case of this three-tiered, 150 foot tall waterfall located near Milford, Pennsylvania. This picture perfect environment encases everything that a nature lover would want. It's more of a hike to reach than other waterfalls in the state, but it is all worth it in the end. The only downfall - no swimming is allowed. However, other waterfalls near are a quick access and provide a more scenic, more interesting hike. Overall, this park is home to the two tallest waterfalls in the state.
4. Fulmer Falls, Pike County
Located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania, an area right outside of Scranton, this 55 foot waterfall, and the other two nearby, are so beautiful, yet a big upset is the fact that the plunge pool has been closed due to visitor impact. This shouldn't stop you, however, as the amenities and hiking trails create the perfect setting for a getaway.
5. Dry Run Falls, Loylasock State Forest
Not even feeling leaving the safety of an air-conditioned, bug free car? There's a waterfall for that! Take a trip up to Hillsgrove, located in north-east Pennsylvania where you can spend time - not only chasing waterfalls, but also - camping, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, hunting, fishing, and an abundance of other outdoor activities that would fill a nature-lovers fantasy. If you are looking for a short walk - literally about 50 feet from the parking lot - the alcove waterfall is ideal. More the hiking, nature type? Good thing the forest itself covers about 43,500 acres.
