These days we're all on our phones. All the time. Whether it's calling, texting, surfing the web, or playing a game, we're consumed by technology. And yet, we hardly think of our iPhones or Androids are therapeutic. Read on for a few apps that prove otherwise.
Breathe2Relax:
Breathe2Relax is available on the iTunes app store. It provides information on the effects of stress on the body in the hopes of decreasing stress and informing us of the potential consequences of stress on our bodies. It also supplies exercises to manage stress—for example, diaphragmatic breathing (where one uses the diaphragm to breathe deeply)—which is said to decrease the flight or fight response.
Optimism:
Optimism is yet another app available on the iTunes app store. It’s good for mental disorders, for it serves as a type of chart or monitoring system for one’s mental health. It monitors ways to manage symptoms and feelings, learn triggers that elicit problematic thoughts or behaviors, and, perhaps most importantly, see the earlier signs of relapse in those suffering from a disorder. The app provides detailed charts that report moods, coping mechanisms used, hours/quality of sleep and exercise, medication taken, meditation done, and food/beverage logs. Finally, the app also suggests further health maintenance strategies.
Pacifica:
Pacifica is an app developed specifically for those suffering from depression and anxiety, but it also helps those under great stress. It’s founded on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and relaxation. As part of the CBT paradigm, it works to break the cycle of repetitive and debilitating thoughts by utilizing tools that target each aspect of the thought process. Importantly, it also works with the patient’s own pace. It doesn't force the user to move along faster than (s)he is ready, nor does it allow patients to stay comfortable at a plateau. Instead, it works with users to move at a reasonable and appropriate pace allowing for better chances at long-term recovery. Like the other apps, it also provides example breathing exercises and a mood log. Different from the other apps stated above, however, Pacifica also provides a supportive community board where members can relate to one another and support each other.
Relax Melodies:
Lastly, Relax Melodies works to better sleep for its users. It contains sounds that are said to encourage and facilitate sleep; it also allows users to combine sounds to create a mixture of noises. Of course, you can adjust the volume of each noise and you may also use timers or alarms. For instance, you can use this app as an alarm clock, but you can also set a sleep-timer so that it goes off after a certain period of time, assuming you have fallen asleep by then. This app doesn't only apply to sleep but can also be beneficial in other settings, such as yoga classes, spa environments, and meditation practices.
