1. Mapei, “Don’t Wait”
Stockholm-based Mapei takes her influences from the most varied sources, from Michael Jackson to the Liberian music she grew up listening to. This is apparent even in her song “Don’t Wait,” a product of arching melodies and floating rhythms.
Think animal prints, gold bangles, and street murals in San Francisco’s Mission District.
2. MisterWives, “Our Own House”
Picture yourself walking into the forests of Narnia, with plenty of surprises along the way. That is “Our Own House,” an explosion of colors housing (haha, get it?) an interesting combination of chilled-out vocals and bombastic drums. One of my faves.
Think water nymphs, log cabins, and liquid diamonds.
3. Phantogram, “Fall In Love”
Miss the ‘90s? Boy, do I have a great one for you. Phantogram’s “Fall In Love” is the quintessential dream-pop/hip-hop fusion -- a synthpop walk on the gritty streets of Berlin, Germany.
Think leather jackets, cigarette smoke, and the color maroon.
4. Halsey & Lido, “Tokyo Narita (Freestyle)”
It’s no surprise that Halsey and Lido are close friends (after dating for a while), but their chemistry as a couple is more than noticeable in “Tokyo Narita.” Halsey’s sweet, yet hypnotic voice, coupled with Lido’s clear-cut production, makes a creatively narrated date night with bae.
Think turquoise hair, busy airports, and beating hearts.
5. Grimes, “Genesis”
There’s a reason this song was featured in an Expedia commercial set in Japan -- Grimes will transport you all the way to the Ginza district in Tokyo. “Genesis,” with its Japanese-themed melody and agile synths, will make you wish you were in a taxi looking up at Tokyo’s neon lights.
Think paper lanterns, the color purple, and sweeping city skylines.
