Contrary to popular belief, Netflix has more than just sappy romantic shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "One Tree Hill." Life cannot entirely be filled with tears from all the tragic moments from these hits; instead, replace those sad tears with happy tears from the numerous stand-up comedies found on Netflix. So next time you're having a bad day, turn your tears into laughs with one of these comedy specials and see how much it can brighten your day.
1. Iliza Shlesinger -- "Freezing Hot"
This special almost entirely covers what it's like to be a woman who is just entering her 30s—from going out for Tapas with your girlfriends, to dating the "appropriate" guys, to trying to ignore the side of you that wants to go out, get drunk and party every night. She uses facial expressions and noises to help hilariously deliver her messages, and this special is by far the most hilarious comedy special I have seen.
2. John Mulaney -- "The Comeback Kid"
It’s rare to see a stand-up that isn’t covered in layers of irony, engaging in some depressing soul-baring, or looking to make broader political statements, which makes the simplicity of Mulaney's approach all the more enjoyable. John Mulaney could probably tell a story about grass growing, and it would still be one of the most entertaining things you hear. This special also has given me my new favorite comeback. "You have the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair."
3. Bo Burnham -- "Make Happy"
My friend just introduced me to Bo Burnham recently after seeing him live at her school, and I can honestly say I was not disappointed. "Make Happy" is a little less comical than the rest of them, but it's also a thousand times more entertaining than any normal stand-up comedy special. Burnham does an amazing job of providing intelligence to his humor, and his use of wordplay is incredible. Burnham is more than just a comedian—he is an incredibly talented artist, musician and singer.
4. Donald Glover -- "Weirdo"
Some may also refer to Donald Glover as the rapper Childish Gambino. Throughout his special, Glover relates to his experience growing up in a home with many other children, most of them foster kids brought in by his parents. He relays story after story about how he’s lived his adolescence and exploits some of his funniest memories. The stories are perfectly weaved together, and it’s as if you get to sit down and listen to grandpa telling an amazing story, except Glover is only 28 and grandpa would never talk about condoms, accidentally dropping babies and pooping in display toilets at Home Depot.
5. Jen Kirkman -- "I'm Gonna Die Alone"
Kirkman reminds me a lot of Iliza Shlesinger, and for a woman who just turned 40, she does not look a day over 30. This special follows the strange logic of her mind, veering off from a message of support about gay marriage to a hilarious tangent about how fun it would be to actually be at the wedding of a woman marrying her cat. Or comparing her body to both a factory that’s slowly closing down and the scary house that no kids visit on Halloween after finding her grey nether hairs.
I guarantee you'll get a laugh out of at least one of these people, so next time you sit down to binge on your favorite show, watch one of these instead. You won't be disappointed.
