Do you ever just watch one of those franchise films such as Fifty Shades or the fifth Halloween movies and just wonder, "how many of these can the production companies make?" Well, the movies on this list have had me asking that same question, and I feel they've completely run out of options. These are the five franchise film series that seriously need to bite the dust.
1. Fifty Shades
I feel I don’t need to really go into this one. Ever since I saw a Fast and Furious-esque sequence from the Fifty Shades Freed trailer, my animosity towards these films hit a whole new level. Yes, I know that Freed is supposedly the last one, but we’ll see if the cash cow doesn’t resurrect itself.
2. The Purge
Okay, even I’ll admit that I was interested in the very first Purge film when I saw the trailers for it. It looked like an interesting premise that could yield similar drama to Night of the Living Dead. Bottom line: it didn’t. One of the most cliché, messy films I’ve ever seen and offered close to nothing redeeming, and the new ones continue this dubious tradition. The poster for the next installment has a Trump-esque hat that says “The First Purge.” Please don’t.
3. Paranormal Activity
While the very first Paranormal film was at least decent, every film afterward was just a stockpile of jump scares and boring plot elements that never seemed to make any sense. What I especially hate about this set of movies is that they’ve essentially bastardized the whole found footage genre, one that I really grew to like at one point. The point of the found footage genre is to make the film appear like it really happen, but when the film so obviously realizes it’s a film, what’s the point? Stop. Now.
4. Pirates of the Caribbean
A lot like the other films on this list, I enjoyed the first one. I thought it was going to be a good one-off Disney film about Pirates…until they introduced the other four films to the cash cow. I’m not so sure they even wanted to make quality films with the last four, they just knew people would camp out and dress as pirates and such, and that they could make a ton of money off of them. Only Disney can stop Pirate Exploitation.
5. Transformers
As a third grader, I LOVED the first Transformers film. As a child, it was everything I wanted out of a film featuring robots who transformed into vehicles and fought to the death. Unfortunately the…well…interesting work of Michael Bay can only go so far. Like they said in The Incredibles, “We appreciate what you did in the old days, but those days are over.”
