As a college student, sleep is definitely something that gets put on the back burner. However, I truly believe sleep is the main thing that gets me through my day. It is so easy to blow it off like, “oh I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” but the problem is, it’s quite hard to function without it.
Sitting here, writing this, I realize that the amount of sleep I get in college is never sufficient. I am always craving more, which is what brings me to one of the most beautiful things known to man. Naps.
There are so many kinds of ways/types of naps and each one is magnificent in it’s own little way.
1. The Cat Nap
This is called the cat nap because one is to grab a blanket, snuggle up in the sun and catch some z’s.
2. The Power Nap
The power nap is little different than the cat nap because the power nap is for 20-30 minutes. It is enough time to refresh yourself, without disturbing the sleeping cycle.
3. The Nap Where You Actually Get REM Sleep
This nap is also different from the cat nap because it is generally longer and allows for the sleep cycle to take place. These types of naps are almost like actual sleep, which is what make them so magnificent. Lots of times, after these naps, one wakes up groggy and confused. That’s how you know it’s a real nap.
4. The Accidental Nap
Then, of course, we have the accidental nap. This is when you are sitting on the couch, attempting to study or read for a class and all of a sudden, you fall asleep. Now this could be for less than a power nap or for about the same amount of time when the REM sleep cycle starts to kick in. Either way, these naps aren’t the best of naps because you definitely feel more flustered and angry with yourself than replenished.
5. And the “5 More Minutes” Nap
This nap definitely happens to the best of us, particularly in the morning. This is the nap when you keeping snoozing your alarm only to realize that you have snoozed it 20 times and 5 more minutes turned into an hour. As much as we would love to convince ourselves that these naps make us feel better, they don’t. In turn, they make us anxious and no one wants anxiety in their happy place!
