Growing up with two older brothers has been an experience I would not trade for anything. From the late-night talks to the vicious fights about who got out in tag, a relationship with my brothers has always been eventful. Throughout the years, we have grown closer. As we have gotten older, I finally realize that they aren’t that bad after all and have actually taught me a lot about myself.
1. Be Tough
Growing up with two older brothers was not always the easiest task. From the punches to being treated like one of the boys, it was sometimes tough to be tough (if that makes sense). You couldn’t cry in a game or get mad when they left you out because, I mean, who wanted to be called a girl?
2. Relax
One thing I finally learned after 20 years of having two brothers was to be more relaxed. That's not to say that I’m always up to their “chill standards,” but I have learned to take a deep breathe before over-reacting. I have learned to not make something small a big problem and to go with the flow. It's tough, and still a work in progress, but I am trying
3. Honesty
“Does this shirt make me look fat?” “Yes. Ew, change.” “Your hair looks like a rat nest.” “Do you ever shower?” When in doubt, I know I can always go to my brothers for 100 percent honesty that I need about an outfit or even a fight with my parents. They don’t sugarcoat anything, and I am forever grateful for that.
4. Loyalty
Through thick and thin, arguments and rejections, my brothers have always stood by my side. They have taught me what it means to be loyal and how to be loyal to others.
5. Good Men are Out There
A lot of times, girls say ”every boy is the same,” but growing up with older brothers has made me optimistic about men. I know how great my brothers are, so they have always given me hope that it’s out there.
