College is an adventure no doubt. It is so heavily romanticized through literature and film, that going into it, you aren't really sure what to expect. Is it really like the movies? Well I mean, sorta. It's like all the movies you see about high school. The ones about college are how people get arrested. Here is a list of 5 major points, I learned my freshman year of college.
1. Small Universities are like small towns...
If you end up attending a small university i.e. a private school, within the first two months, you will either know or know of every person on campus. Everyone knows everything. If you do something stupid at a party, you'll be the last to know. However, this small town vibe isn't all bad, in knowing most everyone you develop connections. You find people that can help you with your trouble subjects. Need help writing a paper? You will probably already know someone majoring in English or Communications that can help you with that paper. Another plus to small universities is, they usually have a more interactive campus life, as well as uncommon majors that you couldn't find at a larger state school.
2. Your social stance from high school is worth nothing in college.
College is a fresh start on all platforms, especially socially. Who you were in high school doesn't matter anymore. You get a chance to start over with new people as you begin to settle into learning who you are and what kind of people you actually want in your life. You will find lifelong friends in college, don't waste a chance at finding them by trying to relive high school popularity.
3. Your roommate is either going to be your best friend or your worst enemy.
Roommates are tricky, you're paired with a complete stranger and are expected to live together for a whole school year. Sometimes, this works out, the two of you hit it off and end up becoming best pals. Sometimes it doesn't, you may be neat and tidy and they may be a walking tornado, you may like to have quiet time, they may like to keep a constant rave your room. Sometimes your roommate won't be able to handle their liquor... while they drink in your room. Also my favorite, they let their friend pop their cherry in your bed(True story). If you and your roommate hit issues like that, it might be a good idea to arrange a room switch.
4. Ed Sheeran is right, the Club is not the best place to find a lover.
Clubs are fun, okay like you get to run around dancing with strangers in a bunch of flashing lights. Though if you meet someone at the club, you're more than likely only gonna leave with their Snapchat, or as a one night stand. The bars are honestly the place to be if you actually want to have a conversation with someone. Granted it is in a bar and will probably be a drunken conversation, but a conversation none the less.
5. All-Nighters will leave you royally screwed.
I used to pull all-nighters, multiple nights in a row. Trying to catch up on work that I didn't/couldn't do because I decided to go party it up instead of working on my assignments, or because of other various issues. Altogether, having pulled so many all-nighters, I was getting my work done, wrong. I was also sleeping through my classes, so even though I finished the work it never got turned in. I ended up getting really sick and completely crashing. My school and social life died tragically. Coffee is amazing, but don't drink it (or any other caffeine) after 4 PM. Stick with decaf and your ever so cozy bed.
