Music junkies everywhere know what it's like to be in what I refer to as a "music rut" — essentially a drought of new music. You just keep listening to the same old stuff, and it gets exhausting. So, in case you're at that frustrating point in your life, look no further. Here are a few artists that are super under-appreciated and will get your summer vibes going in the right direction.
1. Coleman Hell
I heard Coleman Hell on the radio with his most famous song "2 Heads." I was instantly captured from the very first line of the song, prompting me to add it to every playlist I had. I was lucky enough to catch him at a music festival in South Florida, where I fell in love with the rest of his songs. My friends and I played his EP all the way back home. His music is a splice of indie, folk and electronica - which is definitely something unique. Coleman Hell's songs radiate positivity and you'll find yourself fighting not to groove to his music. Here's my favorite song of his — "Sitcom."
2. Bad Suns
These guys are perfect to listen to if you're laying out by the pool or going to the beach. The lead singer has such a distinctive voice, which makes the band sound different than anyone else you've heard. Their style is chill indie rock and almost all of their songs are upbeat. I love absolutely all of their songs, but the one I'll recommend is the one that got me hooked on Bad Suns — "Salt."
Too bad these guys only have one album, am I right?
3. William Beckett
You might recognize William Beckett from his previous band, The Academy Is... His solo project is a little less angsty, but still has an indie/alternative sound. It's a more mature direction for William Beckett to go in, and it pays off. While he has some slow, heartfelt ballads, songs like "Compromising Me," "Oh, Love!" and "Hanging On A Honeymoon" are catchy and uplifting. My personal favorite, however, is "Benny & Joon."
4. Bleachers
Bleachers has those kind of songs that you can get obsessed with easily. They have a pop feel to them while demonstrating some serious songwriting skills. The voice of lead singer Jack Antonoff is deep and mysterious - you kind of can't stop listening. It's hard picking my favorite from these guys, but my original favorite was "Rollercoaster." They also have a lot of great remixes on Spotify if that's your thing.
5. BØRNS
I'd like to thank Spotify for introducing me to this one from the Discover Weekly playlist. I heard a little song called "Dug My Heart" and was captivated by the lyrics. This is a constant in all of BØRNS' songs. His music is slower, but it has so much heart. Not to mention, this guy is extremely talented - his live versions of songs might sound even better than they do recorded. Here's my favorite one below, "The Emotion."
I hope that these amazing artists pull you right out of the music rut and get you in the summer mood.
