Winter break is a good time to kick back, grab a cup of hot chocolate, relax by the fireplace, and of course read a book or two. Here are some holiday-themed books you should consider reading over winter break!

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by Assorted Authors, edited by Stephanie Perkins

This holiday-themed collection is filled with twelve cute short stories written by several of the most popular YA writers such as Rainbow Rowell, Jenny Han, and Stephanie Perkins. Overall, I think it’s a really great holiday read. Instead of solely focusing on Christmas, it incorporates a bunch of different holidays and traditions. It’s filled with both contemporary and fantastical stories. Each story is the perfect length, around 30 pages, allowing the readers to spend time with each story and characters but does not drag the story out too much.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

The real world is boring so discover Narnia this holiday season! This first novel in this classic series follows the adventures of four siblings who discover a secret land behind their wardrobe. The novel is a classic and is a light read that will keep you intrigued this holiday season.

Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn

Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares is the perfect Christmas read. When Dash picks up a notebook at a bookstore in New York City on a cold winter day, he has no idea what he’s getting himself into to. The red notebook he discovers is full of challenges and dares left by a girl named Lily. Dash decides to accept the dares and leaves some challenges for her. The notebook becomes their only form of communication and they begin to share little parts of their lives with each other. The story follows Dash and Lily’s adventures as they start to get to know each other better. Something I really love about this book is the alternating points of view between Dash and Lily that are written by two different authors. The book definitely has an interesting structure to it and is a sweet, funny holiday read!

Let It Snow by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle

This holiday favorite includes three short stories co-written by three authors. Loosely, the three stories focus on what happens when a Christmas Eve snowstorm turns a quiet town into a romantic movie-like getaway. The stories are silly, cute, hilarious, and full of lovable characters. The book is sure to make you laugh out loud and put you in the Christmas/winter spirit.

Ex-Mas by Kate Brian

Santa Claus doesn’t exist... just don’t let the children hear that. Lila Beckwith’s little brother goes off to the North Pole to go help Santa Claus after she suggests to him that the North Pole is melting due to global warming. So before her parents find out, Lila and her friend race to go bring her little brother back home safely. The story is a fast, fun and sweet read for the upcoming break.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
