Immigration has been a bit of a touchy subject lately; from Donald Trump threatening to kick Mexican's out of the country, to building a wall to keep them out.

But what about immigrants who have come from other areas of the world? How many immigrants make up the American population? Refugees fled from political and religious intolerance, looking for financial opportunities that were available in America. Despite persistent hostility, immigrants continued to populate America. So, here are the five facts you didn’t know about immigration:

1. 30 million immigrants entered the U.S. between 1870 and 1930. As business owners and politicians looked to expand economically, government officials and business leaders recognized they could get immigrants to fill their need for cheap labor. They began to go to Europe and advertise new opportunities for immigrants to find work in America. Between 1820 and 1930 the U.S. gained 60% of the world's immigrants, according to infoplease.com.

2. There are 460 languages spoken in the United States, as reported by the APA Presidential Task Force.

3. 27 percent of our doctors and surgeons were not born in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

4. 99 percent of Americans are descendants of immigrants.

5. Forbes magazine reports that 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants and or his/her children, as according to a report from the Partnership for a new economy.
