After the unfortunate loss against Syracuse last week, the University of Dayton's men's basketball team is out of the running for the 2016 NCAA championship. This basketball season ends on a sad note as Flyer fans send off graduating senior Dyshawn Pierre, who has become one of the key players for Dayton over the years. Here's a look at some of his best moments with the team and UD.
1. Elite Eight
With the help of Pierre, Dayton's men's basketball was able to reach the Elite Eight for the second time in Flyer history, the first being in 1984. This unexpected sophomore scored double digits in 3 out of the four games, which enabled their team to beat 6 seed Ohio State, 3 seed Syracuse, and 10 seed Stanford. He led the Flyers on to the final 8 teams by sinking every one of his free throws, having a solid defense, and being quick on his feet. This NCAA run was the start of Pierre's successful basketball career, which would make him a fan favorite and go-to player in the following seasons.
2. Dayton Vs. Boise State
During the first play-in game of the 2014-2015 NCAA Tournament, Pierre led Dayton to the round of 64 with this win against Boise State. Pierre's 9 points and 6 rebounds were able to raise the Flyers in the ranks after they were overlooked by the selection committee, who had given them an undeserving 11 seed. While for most of the game the Flyers were behind the Broncos, Pierre rebounded a shot in the second half, which lightened the mood when, comically, his pants were accidentally pulled to his ankles. Players and Flyer fans everywhere had a pretty good laugh, which raised morale and pushed them to victory after being down 7 points.
3. The Return
After being suspended for a semester, Pierre came back to his last season on December 20th after missing 11 games. His time away had Flyer fans missing their star player, but they were not disappointed as he returned to lead the Flyers to a tough overtime win against Arkansas. This first game was an emotional experience for Pierre, though he chalks his great performance up to the support of the fans, “The [crowd's] reaction was awesome. Like I’ve said a couple hundred times, we have one of the best — if not the best — fan bases in the country. They’re very supportive on and off the court. To see their reaction made me feel back at home, especially with all that was going on.”
4. 2016 A-10 Regular Season Champs
As Pierre prepared for his last home game at the UD arena, there could be no better way to end his career and last senior night by winning the A-10 championship. Even during legal allegations, he was a leader for his team and continued to prove his dedication to Dayton fans and fellow teammates. In an interview, Coach Archie Miller talks of Pierre's perseverance saying, "The thing I remember most about Dyshawn is how unselfish he was. We would not have won our regular season conference championship if his decision wasn't to come back and we probably would not have made the NCAA tournament. He's always been unselfish, but the guy really sold out and gave everything he had to the program. He's a big reason we are where we are right now."
5. The Archie And Dyshawn Era
Dyshawn Pierre was introduced to Dayton's team a year after Archie Miller became the head coach in 2011. From the start, their bond was strong as they first met in Dyshawn's high school gym, simultaneously had their first NCAA appearance, then went on to have two more after that. Over the past four seasons they have won 94 total games together, 44 of them being Atlantic-10 conference games and 5 of them being NCAA tournament games. UD is sad to see this relationship end, though Pierre has shown a lot of gratitude towards the Flyer's men's basketball team, but most of all head coach Archie Miller. The day of his last game he posted this message to Twitter:
