Disney is beloved by everyone. One of the largest companies in the world, it is devoted entirely to making people smile, may it be from theme parks, movies, music, merchandise, or even through sports. So many college students nowadays are products of the "Disney Renaissance", the 1990s period where Disney films were huge successes and had very familiar story-lines.
As the kids born during this time period grow up, I feel as though it should be important for them to go into, and conquer college by taking some of the messages that Disney has tried to give its audience for years. Does everybody get a happy ending in real life? Of course not. But, it can be reached for. Here are some friendly reminders that college students everywhere should take to heart, courtesy of Disney.
1. Our friends will always be there.
Stressed out about exams? Upset over a relationship? Feeling homesick? Talk to a friend about it. Chances are, they're probably feeling the same way, and would love to have someone who feels it too. College is a time for self discovery for all of us, and though we often feel alone in the experience, there are thousands of others going through it, too. So, always be sure to give a call to a friend. They will want to be there for you, no matter what, because they know what you're going through.
2. Work hard, and do your best.
Disney is very much based on the American dream. And though the American dream has its faults, it IS true that working hard gets you places you will never go before. People like Oprah and Bill Gates did not get to where they are today without trying. Studying, trying your best on homework, and constantly looking for opportunities to get you farther will help you succeed. And if you fail? Try again! Failure happens to everyone. Just remember to put your best foot forward, always looking to the future.
3. Never stop dreaming.
Dreams can come in all shapes and sizes. We all have them, and we all want to do different things to make those dreams come true. So, what's stopping you? Dream about making it big in theatre? Join as many productions as you can! What about becoming a professional athlete? Practice everyday! Heck, if you dream about getting enough sleep, go take a nap for gosh's sake! No dream is too ridiculous, and no dream cannot come true, as long as you believe in it. You never know where your mind can take you.
4. Go out and explore new horizons!
There are SOOO many things you can discover throughout your college experience. It could help you find a new passion, such as psychology or helping animals, find a club to join that you may never have expected to, or even take you to a whole new place on an exchange program! Plus, there are so many nooks and crannies on your campus that you may not even know about. Why not go and explore? Take a friend along with you, and see what awesome things your college has to offer. Try exploring the area around your college too! Amazing things are out there for you.
5. And lastly... don't forget to smile!
It may not seem too important, but, staying optimistic and always remembering about the good things can get everyone through the day. While it may seem like life is out to get you, by keeping your head up, you can try to help yourself, and others, make it. Try smiling at a stranger! You may just be the cherry on top of their day. And as they say in Peter Pan, "When there's a smile in your heart, there's no better time to start."
So, next time college has you feeling the blues, remember about the beautiful things Disney has taught us. Keep your head up, whistle a tune, and remember college is not forever. We can all get through this together!
