5 Things Every College Kid Does In The Classroom Besides Listening

Texting, online shopping, and watching TV are among the list of things I have seen college students do in class.

As syllabus week has come to a close at the College, I have taken in a few new sights in the classroom. I am an observer and often find myself looking around at others, constantly. I am a people watcher, and I can't help but notice weird things that others do in the classroom. Each professor has their routine of going through the syllabus during the first class, and it is more than obvious that college students, especially, are never ready for classes to start. Here is a list of 7 things I have observed, during syllabus week, that College students do in the classroom except for listening and learning:

1. Online Shopping

I am guilty as charged. I often find myself searching Amazon for little trinkets that you can't find in stores. My prime account and the 1-Click Purchase option gets to me EVERY SINGLE TIME. Besides, what college professor is going to stop their lecture, and walk to my desk, and make me get off Amazon??

2. Surf Social Media

As sad as it is to say, social media has taken over the lives of so many people. Even myself, if I have more than 3 minutes to wait - I find myself pulling out my cell phone to scroll through my Instagram feed. Being so in touch with today's society has its pros and cons - but, it has become so addicting that some people use it to occupy themselves rather than listening in class.

3. Work On Other Assignments

College can be tough at times, believe me. The workload for some courses is immense. I thoroughly understand why some people use class time to study or work on assignments for other classes, however - there is nothing a little time management can't fix. By not paying attention in one class in order to catch up on another - you will land yourself mediocre grades across the border.

4. Watch Netflix

This may come across as alarming to some folks, but believe me - I have seen it all. There are students who come to class and watch Netflix, rather than paying attention to their professor. I mean, if you are able to watch Netflix and make straight A's in the class - all the power to you, I could never do it!

5. Text Fellow Classmates About The Lecture

No, I was not snooping. But, I have caught myself a couple of times texting my friends using my laptop, talking about the matter at hand during class. Texting is much quieter, more convenient, and less distracting - Am I right?!

Although I have observed many more sights throughout syllabus week - some are just too extravagant to share. Coming back to college after Winter Break is exhausting, I can agree. However, starting the semester on the right foot can set you up for success in the year's to come. If anyone is going to not pay attention during class, this is definitely the time to do it!!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
