Careful... The Sharks are out for blood.

Review: 47 Meters Down
Slash Film

To be perfectly honest, I wasn't sure what to expect going into this movie. It could easily go one of two ways with its concept. A survival horror taking place 47 meters under the sea, surrounded by sharks. Now, that can either be something really interesting and terrifying, or something that seems ridiculous and cringe-worthy.

So, which is it? Well, to sum it up one certain word, it's "entertaining". I'm not going to go preach and declare this to be the best movie that came out this year, it's certainly a flawed film. However, there are several redeeming qualities in it too.

Starting off with the negative, one of the largest parts of the film, or at least one of the largest parts of the film that was marketed at least was the sharks. However, they never really felt like much of a threat. The main characters in the film always just barely got away from getting bitten, or when they did get bitten they were hurt, but it never looked like they were truly in any danger. They were just able to get to safety and stuff a little too much. Other side characters do fall victim to the sharks, but it hardly feels impactful as it could be. Again, perhaps one of my most major complaints about the film is the ending. Right up to the ending, it was generally very interesting and I found myself eager to see what happened next. But then, what we thought happened, does end up happening. Just not as we thought. The ending just felt out of place, and I feel like they missed a terrific opportunity for creating something full of much more despair. Which would have been earned in the tone that had been crafted to that point.

Parts of the film, however, do deserve some credit. Given how the nearly the entire film takes place underwater the special effects were very good. With the addition of what I consider to be stellar camera work, It's certainly a visually pleasing movie. It also has several moments that are going to easily grab your attention. Your mind might be asking "What's going to happen next?" or "Oh god, how stupid is she?". I certainly found myself asking them. Some of the moments are even unintentionally hilarious. Even though the tone of the film is meant to inspire fear in the viewer, it's more like watching cat videos on YouTube. You can respect it as something entertaining, even if it's not the best-executed thing out there.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
