45 Things I Miss About Summer Camp

Who doesn't love sunny days filled with gaga, curly fries and crazy kids?

45 Things I Miss About Summer Camp
Keri

Right now, I would so much rather be waking up for camp than my 8 a.m. I would rather spend seven hours a day dealing with childish nonsense than spend seven hours a day studying for finals. It's that time of year when you're 150 percent over school. You find your mind drifting away from class work and towards the sweet memories of summer which includes eight crazy weeks of camp! Here are a few things to remind you why you can't wait to go back to camp in a few short months:

1. Coming to work every morning and actually being a morning person.

2. Initially not knowing any of your co-counselors to becoming super close friends with all of them.

3. Not questioning what bizarre activities will be scheduled for the day because you know you’re going to have fun.

4. Hearing your campers cheer your name whenever you’re competing in a competition against other counselors, CITS, or employees.

5. Keeping secrets about who likes who (until it changes the next week).

6. Playing intense games of gaga.

7. Campers complaining, “not uh, that didn’t hit my leg” when playing gaga (even though it clearly hit their leg every single time!!!).

8. When you try to sleep for 10 minutes at recess, but you’re campers decide that sitting on you, sticking grass in your ear, and pouring water on you are much better ideas.

9. When the quiet camper finally starts to leave his/her comfort zone.

10. When the loud and energetic camper finally stops clinging to you and makes friends with all of the other campers.

11. When you finally successfully pull off the famous Gatorade shower prank on the co-counselor who's been playing pranks on everyone all week.

12. Not having to regularly go to the gym because camp is exercise enough.

13. Smushed grilled cheeses’ and greasy curly fries during lunch

14. Sneaking back to the kitchen to grab another cookie...or five.

15. When all of your campers are happy with what their parents ordered them for lunch and you can enjoy lunch in peace and quiet without any complaints (kinda...sorta...).

16. Convincing your campers you can't go swimming because you are highly allergic to water...and having them believe it...

17. Telling your girl campers whoever is last to change after swim is going to sit in the back of the van with the boys.

18. Having a camper shoot a perfect bullseye during slingshot after they repeatedly told you they did not want to participate because they were "no good at it."

19. Car rides to nature walks filled with high pitched singing from all of the boys.

20. Even longer car rides to swimming filled with back seat complaints.

21. Having a heart attack when you’re loading the van after an off-campus activity and you’re missing one camper...only to realize that camper went back in the other van.

22. The sense of relief you feel when you actually have all of your campers.

23. Having a CIT who eventually becomes somewhat like a little brother.

24. Wearing T-shirts, shorts, sneakers and a messy bun every single day of the week.

25. When you’ve been dunked in the dunk tank 22 times, but your co-counselor thinks it would be funny to dunk you 23 times.

26. Being surrounded with people that are silly enough impersonate the classic Jack and Rose scene from "Titantic" in front of a crowd of parents.

27. Playing interactive games such as real life Hungry Hungry Hippos -- Yes, this actually is a thing!

28. Constantly yelling at your CIT for being ultra competitive during sports games with campers that are 8, 9 and 10 years old.

29. Having to catch jello being thrown off of the roof...in your mouth.

30. Then having to explain all of the bizarre activities you do at camp when friends and family see pictures on Facebook.

31. Not seeing any of your non-camp friends over summer, but feeling like you’re not missing out on anything.

32. Going to bed at 11 every night to have enough energy for the next day.

33. Days when your campers listen to all of your directions without a complaint.

34. Days when you get to go home in peace without explaining why one of your campers was crying.

35. Being ambushed with a million hugs every morning when your campers arrive.

36. Being ambushed with a million hugs every afternoon when your campers leave.

37. The days leading up to the Variety Show where you arrive early in the mornings and leave late in the afternoons in order to perfect the counselor routine.

38. Becoming somewhat like a drill sergeant when choreographing a routine for your campers in order to be the best at the Variety Show.

39. Forcing the campers to practice the Variety Show dance beginning to end at least 30 times before lunch period.

40. Shedding a tear when your campers perfectly execute every dance move (no matter how simple) during the Variety Show.

41. Having your campers parents come up to you and tell you how much of an impact you have had on their daughter's/son’s summer.

42. Looking back at the end of camp and seeing how much your campers have progressed and changed.

43. Hugging your campers goodbye on the last day of camp and promising you will see them next year.

44. Leaving camp for the last time and smiling at all of the memories you made.

45. Realizing your best memories of summer were made at camp and you can't wait to return in a few short months!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
