4 Simple Keys To Unlocking Inner Peace

Sometimes it takes more than buying a yoga mat and some essential oils to achieve the inner calm that we all strive for.

Peace is not exactly something we "have," rather it is an outlook on how we see ourselves and the world around us. Here are a few small steps we can take to ignite peaceful perspectives in our daily lives.

1. Breathe.

Obvious, yet effective. In a mindset of constant worry, we tend to lose focus on our true purposes and intentions. If we take moments to "press pause" and simply breathe, our minds become calm and centered on what's important.

2. Stay focused on your worth, no matter what others say about you.

Remaining concentrated on our inner value can be truly difficult when we're surrounded by negativity. No matter who you are, there will always be somebody who will point out the flaws within you. There are no perfect beings on this Earth, and anyone who pretends to be perfect has larger issues than our own. The harsh truth is that some people get their happiness from pointing out the flaws in others. As sad and pathetic as that is, once we realize this, we can come to grips with our own character. When we rise above others' judgments, we're set free as we're comforted knowing who we truly are.

3. Make amends with your mistakes.

Throughout life, we learn who we are and we work for who we want to become. Along the journey, of course, we'll have bumps in the road. The greatest lessons often come from our greatest failures. We try new things, make mistakes, and hopefully learn from them. If we dwell and obsess over our failures, when will we focus on our triumphs?

4. Zoom out.

Instead of worrying about the tiny details of a situation, what if we looked at the big picture every once in awhile? Thinking about what our overall and long-term goals are will be more motivating than being overly-concerned with the specifics. When we focus on what we're working towards, we simplify our lives into what is truly important.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
