Shopping can be a great way to pass the time while waiting for your flight at an airport. You can stop by a Hudson News shop to grab some snacks for the flight or a magazine for entertainment. There are several items and services commonly sold in airports that have never made sense to me.
1. Luggage
When I see luggage for sale in an airport, I have to ask myself "who in the world is buying this?" What kind of idiot shows up to an airport ready to go on vacation without a suitcase? I don't know about you, but I've never seen anyone roll into an airport carrying a bunch of plastic bags filled with clothes and toiletries on a mission to find the perfect suitcase.
2. Tourist-y things
There are three main reasons people buy touristy things at airports. The first reason is that you're loaded with money and feel like wasting it on extremely overpriced items made in China to represent whatever country you've travelled to. The second reason is that you're either early for your flight or you have a long layover in another country or city, so you're shopping to pass the time. You decide it's a great idea to purchase an item representing an attraction or a country you've never actually travelled to so you can lie to your friends and family about what you did. The last reason is that you forgot to purchase a gift for a friend or family member and in a state of panic, you run to the nearest Hudson News shop to find something. But if you forgot about your friend in the first place, are they really worth the jacked up airport prices?
3. Airport Massages and Spa Services
Have you noticed how, in large airports, there are little spas right in the middle of a large walkway? As you're walking through the airport, there are usually some electronics kiosks, and perfume kiosks, and then right in the middle of all that, are people getting massages... IN THE WALKWAY! I am all for pampering, especially after the stress of travel. Personally, however, I would be uncomfortable getting a massage or facial or eyebrow wax in the open in an un-congested location, much less in front of the many travelers in the airport.
4. Ridiculously Expensive Electronics
Unless you're filthy stinking rich, I would like to think that you contemplate for a very long time about making large purchases. That's why I think it is ridiculous that they sell expensive electronics at airports. Those purchases are most likely impulse buys. I mean, who thinks to themselves "I need to buy some $200 Beats headphones, I might as well head to the airport to grab them!" Most people would probably do research on the electronics and head to the nearest Best Buy.
