Over the past few years, I've noticed more and more girls in elementary/middle/high school sharing their stories of being sent home because their clothes have been deemed "inappropriate" for the school day. Many of these schools have sexist dress codes that condemn girls for having bodies, and male students are allowed to do whatever they wish with their bodies. Apparently, the threat of a boy or teacher not being able to do their work because of a female's skin showing is too big of a risk for our youth. Here is a list of some of the most ludicrous reasons girls were sent home/suspended/made to change their clothes.
1. Gabi Finlayson, Utah
Gabi was sent home from her school dance because her shoulders were exposed and her school's dress code said that straps could be no less than two finger-widths wide. I don't know whose fingers were being used to judge for this dress, but this dress is much more conservative than many that were worn at my school dances that never had anything said about them.
2. Macy Edgerly, Orange County Texas
Macy was sent home for somewhat unclear reasons for her long shirt and leggings. Assuming she was sent home because of the leggings, I'd like to point out that there are no rules that makes it against the rules for males to wear tight pants, only women.
3. Any Female Student, Straffordshire, England
Students at a school in England are not allowed to wear skirts at all, whatsoever, as female students wearing skirts distract male teachers. I'm not a parent, but if there were teachers at a school who were distracted by my child's shins and knees, I think the issue probably lies with the teacher more than the student.
4. 5 Year Old Girl
A five year old girl was made to change at school because she was wearing spaghetti straps. Not only is this ridiculous because it is the sexualization of a five year old, but also because when her father checked her school's dress code, there were zero rules regarding boys.
This is a minimalist list of ridiculous rules put in place as to what young women can and cannot wear. There are girls not allowed to wear tuxes to prom. There was a girl who had her honor roll status taken away because her dress that was allowed at her school was against the code at the school she was giving a speech at. In Florida. Hate to break it to you dress code makers, but girls get hot and sweaty and uncomfortable just as much as boys do. Just because female bodies have been objects of sexual objectification for pretty much all time, doesn't mean they still have to be now, or that they should be denied their education because of what they put on their body. It's 2016 and a woman could very well be President of this country soon. Let's start treating girls in schools the way they should be treated.
