Silsbee, Texas is basically what you picture when you think of a small town: A few red lights, a couple of grocery stores, and schools. I grew up there, and a few things make it a little different than other towns. Here are some signs you grew up in Silsbee:

1. No one asked what you were doing on Sunday 'cause the already knew. You were going to church.

2. And speaking of church, there's basically one every couple of blocks.

3. You remember the smell of the paper mill.

4. You definitely remember the trains. Trains all day, every day.

5. And back to that train... When you see a train that goes above five miles per hour, you're amazed.

6. If you were lucky, you got to get a snow cone from Ms. Shirley after school on Fridays.

7. You remember the field day we got to have every year in elementary school.

8. You still love to see Hardin-Jefferson lose a game...even if you graduated twenty years ago.

9. You can probably still remember the size of your graduating class.

10. You know what Caneyhead is. It isn't on the map, but it's real.

11. You basically had two options when it came to where to shop -- Brookshire Brothers or Wal-Mart.

12. You remember running into at least a few people you knew everytime you went somewhere.

13. You never had to worry about traffic.

14. You still pull over for funeral processions because you learned respect.

15. You know that The Donut Palace is THE place for donuts and kolaches.

16. And in the morning, McDonald's is the coffee joint.

17. Friday night football was life.

18. And, even now, you root for the Tigers.

19. You looked forward to Cruise'n Silsbee.

20. And the Christmas parade was the best.

21. You probably took a senior picture on those famous train tracks.

22. Or by the antique gas pumps north of Silsbee.

23. The sound of a train soothes you at night and reminds you of home.

24. You spent your summers on the lake or at the creek.

25. And summer nights were perfect on the front porch.

26. You still try to support the Pines Theatre when you're in town.

27. You think it is weird when a town has more than one high school.

28. You remember the sound of the bell ringing out from the church across from Brookshire Brothers.

29. You still smile when someone asks where you're from.

30. 95% of the time, they'll have no idea where Silsbee even is, so then you tell them that you're close to Beaumont or near the Louisiana border.

31. People from other parts of the state recognize your deep East Texas accent.

32. You wouldn't trade your hometown for the world.

33. And you still visit every so often... because home is where the heart is.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
