31 Reasons Why Students Really Deserve a Snow Day

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

31 Reasons Why Students Really Deserve a Snow Day

I always forget how much an email can change my life until I wake up and sleepily check my phone to find the most wonderful news I could hope for: a snow day. While I'm grateful for my education and trekking across the blustery arctic of campus isn't so bad, cancelled classes due to inclement weather is something I think we can all agree makes our day. Unfortunately, due to global warming and definitely due to Maryland's notoriously wacky weather, here we are in March and I have yet to receive a single snow day email. So, as the self-proclaimed Snow Queen (sorry, Elsa), here are all the reasons why I declare every school year needs just one snow day:

1. It's honestly just not safe to go to school when the weather is bad. Think of the children...

2. No college student gets enough sleep. Just let us spend one surprise day in bed.

3. Campus is a big place, with lots of sneaky ice patches. I'm going to fall if I go outside, so let's just prevent that.

4. If you think your campus is beautiful on the first day of class in August, imagine it covered in a pristine blanket of snow. It looks like a Christmas card.

5. A school-wide snowball fight is a treasured bonding experience that everyone should get at least once.

6. If there was even a chance of snow, it's reasonable to assume half the class didn't do the homework anyway. Really, it's just saving the trouble to cancel.

7. There's something about a snow day that just makes us want fresh baked cookies. So really, we're taking the time to cultivate our culinary skills for the future.

8. All the food in our fridge was probably about to go bad anyway, now we just have time to eat it and try our hand at cooking new things.

9. We're actually really social when there's no class. Dorm-wide game of Just Dance, anyone?

10. We might also be pretty productive, since we now have a whole day to catch up on all the work we've been putting off.

11. Our moms will worry and call us to check in, and we really should call our moms more often anyway.

12. Plus we brought all these coats, boots, and scarves so we should really get some use out of them.

13. Have you ever tried walking through the snow? HOLY LEG WORKOUT, BATMAN!!

14. But if we had to walk through snow carrying our heavy backpacks, we might pass out. Carrying supplies for a snowman, on the other hand, is completely manageable.

15. Speaking of which, building a snowman is an art form that brings people together.

16. As is stealing trays from the dining hall for sledding (but you didn't hear that from me.)

17. Once we've procured the appropriate materials for sledding, we will have a renewed appreciation for just how many steep hills our campus has.

18. We will probably get cold and go buy some hot chocolate, which supports local business.

19. We will get too cold to go on, head back home, and curl up in every blanket we own to watch movies.

20. If we live on campus, we don't have any upstanding citizenship duties to worry about like shoveling.

21. We will be forcefully reminded of any pressing maintenance matters that we've been putting off, like leaky windows or broken heaters.

22. We will feel the satisfaction of being all warm and cozy, while staring down that one kid who mistakenly thought shorts were a good idea, but refuses to admit that he's cold.

23. Most professors build in a snow day to their syllabus, so really it's just keeping the class on track.

24. Snow makes everything look so picturesque, a beautiful sight that can brighten anyone's mood.

25. Snow days make us feel like little kids again.

26. We can play Get Down, Mr. President without fear of concussion.

27. What's funnier- watching your friend slip and fall (as long as they're okay) or watching your friends tread inch by inch trying not to fall?

28. Laughing so hard at your fallen friends that you slip and fall yourself, so all of you are sprawling on the ground.

29. Getting ice cream because by some phenomenon humans want ice cream in the snow.

30. For one reason or another, we will go outside and probably get more fresh air than we've had all week.

31. Just being silly and free and having fun with our friends worry-free.

Snow days are a magical thing. Education is important and missing weeks of school for the weather is an extreme but I believe that every school year needs one snow day to keep us all sane. So come on weather and university administration, just one. Please?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
