Many people cringe or laugh at the idea of ever talking to their ex's again. Some reasons are justified - they were unfaithful, abusive, or just a bad partner. But what about the other breakups, the civil I-wish-nothing-but-the-best-for-you breakups? The people who you simply fell out of love with? Do those ex's belong completely in the past? I say no - and here's why:
1. They Already Know Everything About You Anyway
Most people in a relationship say "I'm dating my best friend." If this is true, why can't you just rekindle the friendship? They've seen you at your worst, know all your secrets, and what makes you tick. They know the good in you, your greatest accomplishments, and your future goals. You'll remember certain traits in them as well, and you'll realize how much you missed their humor, intelligence, or bravery. You'll start to remember why you had clicked so well before.
2. There Are Too Many Memories to Throw Away
Everybody has had "our song" or "our place", and now every time you hear that melody or pass that old hangout, you can't help but think of the times you've shared there. It's hard to reminisce alone. It is so much better to just shoot a text and say, "Hey, our song is playing," or "Remember that time you spilled your Coke all over that waiter?" Even though you may not be making more memories with them, you can still look back and smile at the good times you've had because of them.
3. You Still Love Them
Just because you fell out of love with them doesn't mean you don't love them. I realized after falling out in love with my ex, I still genuinely loved him as a human being. A healthy, platonic friendship is completely possible because chances are, you still respect, appreciate, and think highly of one another as long as things didn't end on bad terms.
I'll admit there are a lot of ex's I hope I never see again, but to the one that I still consider a friend, I thank you for being a good partner and an even better friend. I encourage you all to text that one person next time you hear your special tune, drive past your favorite restaurant, or just simply miss their silly jokes. Bridges are better left not burned.
