3 Simple Pathways To Inspiration This Break

Let's face it: when you're on break and you don't have hours of homework, social events, or mental breakdowns cramming your schedule, you tend to wonder what you're going to do with your time. Yeah, you could spend the majority of your days scrolling social media and binge-watching Gilmore Girls, or you could take this time to do things you might not normally do when school is in session. Take this time to gather creativity and make yourself giddy with ground-breaking thoughts and ideas. As a push to find my own inspiration, I've come up with a few different ways to break any boredom that you might have, and find your muse along the way to make something great.

1. Go out and appreciate where you are.

Whether you're in your hometown, your college town, or visiting family across the country, appreciate where you are. Go for a walk and pay special attention. You might find inspiration in your surroundings. Visit a new restaurant, appreciate the food that's special to that town. Skip Starbucks and spend some time in a local coffee shop. Find beauty, uniqueness, and artistry wherever your are this break.

2. Take pictures.

Take lots and lots of pictures. While you're home for the holidays, take pictures of your mom cooking dinner. Snap a shot of the neighborhood at sunset. It might seem insignificant now, but later on, those photos will be all that you have to relive that moment. You'll remember what that time of holiday cheer entailed, and what it meant to you. Perfect or imperfect shots, it's the moment you captured that matters.

3. Create content.

Write your next viral Odyssey article. Start up that blog or website you've been thinking about. You might sit down and spend an hour creating a small part of what ever it is that you're working on, but it's a start. Sometimes starting can be the hardest part. Use the inspiration of the life around you to create something that you're proud of, something that you're passionate about and you want to share it with the world. You'll be glad that you did.

Basically, go out and find your passion while you're not being bogged down with school work. Take the cherished time with family members to a fire for your next great project. Find beauty in a dull part of your town and turn it into art. I've been in somewhat of a lull; I'm having trouble writing and creating things that I'm proud of. Take these simple suggestions and dig deep. I'll take my own advice, too.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
