Incoming Creighton students, here is a list of twenty-six things only Creighton students will understand. You may consider it your warning sign and guide book, follow it closely and you may just survive.
For returning students, read this for kicks and giggles because these are our inside jokes.
A. Alcohol
Creighton is surprisingly a wet campus. Meaning, if you are of legal drinking age, you can freely drink on campus. If you are underage and a rule breaker, beware of sporadic bag checks, which is when the front desk of your residence hall must search your large bags for alcohol before you enter the building.
B. Brandeis vs. Becker
Personally, I think Sodexo is Sodexo no matter which dinning hall you go to... BUT if you really want comfort food, do not miss out on Becker mac-n-cheese. P.S. I think Harper has the best fries.
C. Community Service
If you love giving back to the community, Creighton is the perfect place for you! There are so many organizations that are community partners with Creighton. Go to the SCSJ aka CCSJ in Harper to talk to a whole team of Creighton members, who will recommend service trips and centers for volunteering.
D. Degree Works
If you are struggling with advising on your major or potential career paths and do not know what requirements you need to fulfill, degree works is your answer. Located on The Nest, you can use degree works to input potential majors and minors and all of your Magis Core and class requirements will be outlined to show you what classes overlap and what additional courses are necessary to graduate on time.
E. Eating Off Campus
JayBucks, which is basically money on your student ID for doing laundry and etc. can be used at a few restaurants off campus. Another pro-tip is to check out Creighton promotions, some restaurants (like Crave) will have discounts for students for a short time.
F. Free Stuff
I could write a whole listicle on getting free stuff at Creighton. First, Wednesday after class on the mall or in Skutt is a must do every week for free snacks and other wonderful things. Second, open your app store now and download pocket points, which is an app that awards you with store and restaurant discounts for the amount of time you spend off your phone while studying or in class.
G. Greek Life
Formal recruitment for both sororities and fraternities start at the beginning of the second semester. Unfortunately, that means, for women, you will be returning to campus early to run around in the snow so avoid wearing heels at all costs. Remember to be grateful for second-semester recruitment because you already have a solid group of friends pre-rush.
H. Health
The student health center located in Harper is very convenient and you can also get services for mental health concerns.
I. International Studies
If you are interested in going abroad to study, make sure to visit the Global Engagement Office in Creighton Hall to start planning early! Creighton has a great connection in a couple of countries but many programs have to be done through a third party company.
J. Java Jay
Late night cookies at the Java Jay are high key the best thing on the menu. When you think you will die from another page of reading, take a break and head to the Java Jay located beneath McGloin!
K. KFC
I am not talking about Kentucky Fried Chicken or Colonel Sanders. In fact, I am talking about getting healthy! The KFC is the main gym for Creighton students, where you have access to quality equipment and classes (from yoga to cycling).
L. Library
The Reinert Library becomes THE study spot at Creighton during midterms and finals. If you want other study spots, ten out of ten would recommend the study rooms in Gallagher, which will sadly be torn down soon. Creighton is also special because all of the classrooms are open to students, even after hours; find your favorite classroom and mark your territory!
M. Moving Out
ATTENTION! THIS IS A WARNING. So freshmen year when you move in, all of the welcome week team unloads your car for you and brings EVERYTHING to your room. When you move out, it is survival of the fittest. There is no dream team to help you. Try to pack up before you have to study for finals. P.S. those beds can be death traps when you loft or un-loft them.
N. Nest
The Nest is where you will go to handle just about everything! From tuition to class registration, the Nest is really something you should learn to navigate asap.
O. Office Hours
I cannot stress how grateful I am for Creighton Professors who hold office hours. Seriously, if you are ever confused from a lecture or need help with an essay, go to office hours and ask for help. If you never ask your questions then your answer will always be "no." Don't say "no" to success and good grades.
P. Printing
One of the best things to happen in 2016? Creighton added $25 to your student ID just for printing. Remember to use all of those dollars because they don't roll over.
Q. Quiet Hours
Nothing is worst than having to hear your friends party because they finished finals early and you will not be done until Friday. If you want to study late during midterms or finals, try to avoid your dorm room.
R. Resident Advisors
RA's are your fun neighbors who can sometimes be your pseudo parents, helping you whenever you need. PSA if you become and RA, you get free room and board and monthly stipends, which work as dining dollars. You should definitely consider becoming an RA.
S. Skutt Shutdown
If there is a club, community, or committee you are interested in joining, you will learn all about every organization on campus at Skutt shutdown.
T. Technology
Need someone tech savvy to help you? Go to DoIt and they will answer all of your questions. If your laptop breaks down, they can walk you through the problem and even loan you a laptop for temporary use!
U. University Problems
Sometimes there are leaks or floods. Other times there are causal power outages that cause two dorm buildings to have to evacuate... Class of 2019 knows exactly what I am referencing. Just remember to make the most of it!
V. Values
The Jesuit values become an integral part of your education at Creighton and if you really honor these six values, I promise you will stand out to future employers and schools!
W. Welcome Week
This feels like the longest week of your life. I kid you not, welcome week starts before classes do and by the time you are in class, you will think you have been at Creighton for a year and could run the campus.
X. X-walk
Take caution on 24th St. Legends say that if you die crossing he street you will become one of the black squirrels on campus.
Y. YOCO
You only college once!! Studying and succeeding are very important but going out and making memories with friends are important too! Remember to take some time to get to know the people around you and have fun.
Z. Zero Dinning Dollars
Do not spend all of your dinning dollars in the first month. I will admit that Starbucks can become an addiction but pace yourself. Nothing is worse than being broke.
