25 Reasons Why My Roommate Is My Best Friend

25 Reasons Why My Roommate Is My Best Friend
Jackie Magurno

When I was in high school, my definition of friendship was who I was the closest with for the longest time. That all changed when I got to college and met my roommate. I never knew I could become best friends with someone just 10 minutes after meeting them. I never knew I could meet someone who is basically the same person as me to the point where we think we were separated at birth. I never knew I could meet someone who understands me better than I understand myself.

I'm so glad we can share the same loud, sassy, and sarcastic personality. The second our parents closed the door to our dorm room on move-in day, we instantly became partners in crime. They probably weren't even out of the building yet, and we were already wreaking havoc in our hall. You know it's bad when people think were worse than "that couple." When people see us, they automatically say, "Oh no, what are you two up to?" with a terrified look on their faces. When we're not attached at the hip, people automatically assume something terrible happened to one of us because everyone knows we're a package deal.

I want to thank you for showing me the true meaning of friendship and sisterhood. Thank you for being not only the best roommate I could have asked for, but the best friend a girl could have ever ask for. Here are 25 reasons why my roommate is my best friend.

1. We're attached at the hip, so you might as well call us CatDog.

2. We call ourselves Mary Kate and Ashley because we're not only best friends, but also sisters.

3. We can sit in a room together in silence, but still having fun just because we're in the presence as each other.

4. It's like we have a double wardrobe because my closet is your closet and vice versa.

"Are you wearing my sweatshirt today, or can I wear it?"

5. We speak in our own language.

All it takes is one look or code word, and you know exactly what it means, from "Stop talking, my mom doesn't know I did that" to "This boy is weird, please help me."

6. We hate the same people.

We don't always have a reason to, but if my best friend hates you, then so do I.

7. We do everything together.

No, this is not an exaggeration—we plan when to shower at the same time so we can talk from shower stall to shower stall.

8. We are always straight up with each other.

Even if that means telling me that the hat I'm wearing makes me look like a little boy.

9. We can act like complete weirdos together and not care what anyone else thinks.

10. We don't get mad when one of us insults the other. We just laugh and think of something even more offensive to say.

11. People are always asking us if were sisters or twins.

"No, just best friends, but were basically sisters."

12. You're always my dance partner at frat parties, even though I'm a worse dancer than Taylor Swift.

13. We always plan who's going to be the mom of the night when we go out, but then both end up getting drunk and taking care of each other.

14. We can make random noises or faces and know exactly what the both person is trying to say or how they're feeling.

15. When were together, we're always laughing.

These laughs come at some of the worst times. For example, in the class we decided to take together.

16. When one of us says something dumb, there's only a certain amount of time before it ends up quoted on Twitter.

17. When we reunite, whether it's after a month break or an hour class, it's always a scene.

18. We have an endless amount of pictures and selfies together, and it's basically my entire Instagram.

19. You're always there for me when I need to talk.

For example, the daily vent sessions about the guy I like that I know you don't want to hear, but you always listen to like a trooper.

20. You're always down to order food with me.

Whether it's 3 a.m. pizza after a night out or the necessary study food: Domino's cheesy bread and cinna sticks. "You eat half of the cheese bread, I'll eat half of the cinna sticks, and then we'll switch."

21. We share everything, from food to clothes to books and sometimes even to boys. (LOL)

22. We live together, but every night is a "sleepover" with you.

Whether you're laying at the end of my bed like a "little kitty cat" or in your own bed, it's a sleepover that never ends.

23. We have "our songs."

When these songs come on while we're out, we go crazy, rapping all the lyrics to "Only" and "Back to Back" or dropping it low to "Apple Bottom Jeans."

24. We must have heard this question 1,000 times: "Did you guys know each other before college, or are you just super close?"

25. We always plan to go to the gym together twice a week, but barely make it there twice a month.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

Students walking on a sunny college campus with trees and buildings.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
