22 Things I Do Not Want To Be Asked On November 24th

The holidays can be stressful and joyful and everything all at once. We all know the commonly asked questions that NONE of us want to answer at the Thanksgiving table this week. Sadly, these questions are undoubtedly going to be asked even though we have tried to answer them before or even warned people not to ask them.

1. So how is school going? Are you passing all of your classes?

Aunt Deb, school is stressful and I'm overtired and I contemplate dropping out all the time, but I am going to continue to tell you that "It's going well."

2. What is your major again? And how are you going to get a job with that?

For the 18th time, I am a ______ major and I do hope to land a job in my field. However, if it doesn't work out, I might just change my major and/or completely change my field, but let's wait to find out at next Thanksgiving.

3. Have you made any friends yet?

I go to a small university in Vermont, so it's actually quite easy to make friends, which is super nice especially when you are living over three hours away from home.

4. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?

Mom, I know you want grandchildren, but that is nowhere in the near future, so I am going to continue to say no. Thanks for having faith in me, though.

5. Have you looked at graduate programs yet?

Well since I am unsure as to if I am going to graduate at this point, no I haven't solidified anything. However, I am planning on doing something after graduation.

6. How long will it take you to graduate?

Well, we are hoping I am on a four-year track, but I guess we will figure that out in the future too.

7. How are your roommates?

We are basically a group of girls that spend most of our time together eating, sleeping, or gossiping. So everything is going pretty well and they are my best friends.

8. How are your professors?

Most of them are pretty chill, except the ones that don't let you into lecture if you are one millisecond late... Therefore, I am terrified to be late and I am always there at least 15 minutes before class starts. Other than that, they are super nice.

9. What ever happened to *insert ex's name here*? Are they still in the picture?

Maybe we shouldn't talk about this at the dinner table.

10. Do you still talk to *insert friend's name* from highschool?

I may have been friends with this person freshman year, but I really haven't seen too much of each other since then... Especially since we now to go different colleges.

11. When can we come visit?

That would require complete disinfection of my dorm along with blind folds for part of the things you may see... Therefore, you must give me a week's notice prior to any visits.

12. Why don't you come home more often?

I'm sorry I don't come home as often as possible. But that would require me to pack my car, drive all the way home, sleep all weekend, pack my car again, and drive back. It's just quite exhausting coming home, I'm sorry.

13. Did you hear what *super smart relative* has been up to?

No, and honestly I don't think I can hand the self-disappointment as I am currently trying to pass my on-level courses while keeping up a social life.

14. What does your bank account look like?

Please don't do this to me.

15. Do you have a job yet?

Not exactly, but on the bright side, I am looking for one that I have the time for! That's a good sign, right?

16. How's the party scene at school?

Ha. Ha. I'm sure you can assume what it's like. We have all seen the movie depictions.

17. How are you planning on paying for school?

Well, since you are all out of school, I was wondering if anyone had any donations? No? Yeah, I don't blame you.

18. How much debt will you be in when you graduate?

Y'all are just trying to get me to excuse myself from the table and start cleaning the kitchen, aren't you?

19. What do you do in your free time?

Basically, I nap, eat, dance, nap again, do some homework, maybe watch some Netflix while eating, and then probably go to bed for the night.

20. Why do we only see pictures of you out at not at the library?

There aren't phones allowed in our library but trust me, I am totally a regular there.

21. Where are you planning on living after graduation?

Mom? Dad? I hope you haven't already converted my room into an office.

22. Who did you vote for this election?

Last, but surely not least, please do not ask me this question. I will gladly walk home from Thanksgiving dinner if this is brought up... Let's be honest, I haven't been to the gym enough and I could use the exercise.

I hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving and much needed time off of school. Hopefully, your break does not feature these horribly painful questions.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
