Most people say that being in your twenties is the prime of your life. I guess I won't know if I agree with that until I'm no longer in my twenties. To me, I feel like I've lived for a long time, but then I remember some people have had jobs longer than I've been alive, so that put things in perspective for me. There is a lot of knowledge and wisdom out there that I have yet to discover, but I feel like I've learned a lot so far in my short life. I know I am young.
Here are 22 things I've learned in 22 years:
1. It's not too late.
It's not too late to make your life the way you want it to be. I see people who have achieved so many awesome things that are a lot older than I am before they do.
2. Sometimes, people suck.
People will betray you, cheat on you, break your heart, lie to you, piss you off, etc. That is just a fact of life.
3. You can't take everything personally.
I'm the world's worst at this. Sometimes people say and do things and mean them in a totally different way than you took them.
4. Your major in college doesn't define your life after college.
It can feel restricting, but it doesn't have to be. I would go so far to say that most people don't end up working in the exact field they studied.
5. Time truly does heal.
I know sometimes when you feel like the world is ending that it will never get better, but it really does. It may take weeks, months, or even years, but take heart, this too shall pass.
6. Not everyone who comes into your life is going to stay, and that is okay.
I believe everyone who comes into your life has a purpose, but they may fulfill that purpose in a season of your life and then walk away from it.
7. You spend your whole life with one person--YOU.
So, get comfortable in your own skin. If you don't like something about yourself, change it or change how you look at it.
8. Perfection doesn't exist in this world.
So, don't strive for it. When it comes down to it, perfectionism is a form of insecurity.
9. Be present.
I know it can seem like most of your world is in your phone and social media, but it's not. Be present with wherever you are and whoever you're with.
10. You don't need to have everything figured out right now.
Sometimes, I forget how young I really am, and how much life I still have to live.
11. Just because you're not currently engaged like all your friends, doesn't mean you never will be.
This is a hard one to remember. Learn to stop comparing yourself to others, and you'll be much more content.
12. Keep your friends close.
People need people. You need them, and they need you. Time is precious, so spend it with people who mean a lot to you.
13. You're allowed to feel your emotions.
Girls get a bad reputation for this, but it's so important. If you're sad, be sad. If you're mad, be mad. If you're happy, allow yourself to be happy.
14. Get to know yourself.
Find out what excites you, calms you down, makes you tick, etc. These things are important.
15. You are not defined by anything you don't want to be defined by.
GPA, grades, jobs, what someone said about you, someone who rejected you... forget about them!
16. Honesty really is the best policy.
This saves any kind of relationship. TRUST ME.
17. Work hard.
No one has ever had a bad word to say about someone who works hard in order to achieve great things. It always pays off.
18. It's okay to put yourself first.
Your mental health, physical health, and spiritual health depend on you to make sacrifices sometimes. It's for your own benefit.
19. GET ENOUGH SLEEP.
This is so important for your overall health and your mood. Sleep improves so many things. Netflix can wait until the morning.
20. Remember to practice gratitude.
Remember all that you have to be grateful for, and it will outweigh the bad things of life every time.
21. Smile more.
It's proven that a smile can improve your mood. It can change your day and other's days too!
22. Forgive yourself.
You are going to make mistakes--a lot of them. Forgiving yourself is hard but so necessary. Don't be so hard on yourself. You are not alone and you are not the only one.
