“Stuck in limbo” is a phrase that is typically used to define a state of uncertainty as you’re waiting for something important, such as a major decision about your future. At the age of 21, the amount that I connect with the above phrase is frightening. I am on the brink of making decisions that will lead me into the rest of my life, and I cannot make any of those decisions. As a 21 year old, am I really supposed to know where I’m headed for the next 60+ years? When I have to sit down and think about the fact that graduation is in 6 months, it feels like falling down 7 flights of stairs. Usually, the next step is to grab a bottle of wine, pop it open, and sit on the couch and drown my sorrows. I’ve got all the time in the world, right?
Contrary to popular belief, no, at 21, you do not have all the time in the world to make decisions. Come 6 months, you will be financially INDEPENDENT with a job and living ON YOUR OWN. Financially INDEPENDENT?!?! How on earth could that be? You just graduated from college after spending all your money on food and drinks. Oh, and let us not forget student loans. Where is this so-called “money” to assist you in living on your own? I know I don’t have any of it, yet I have many dreams of one of the trees in my backyard growing money to assist me. Referring to that previous statement, college has the ability to make you think delusionally, so make sure to always check if you are living in the real world or a daydream at least five times a day. As for living on your own, there is one question: HOW? For the past 21 years, you were supported in every aspect of the word. Your mom and dad did EVERYTHING for you and now, just in ONE DAY, you have to live on your own?!? What if you put a chinese-takeout container from a week ago in the microwave and burn the house down? What if you lose your house key and are locked out for hours? What if you overload the washer and dryer and flood your house? With no mom and dad there to help, you’re ultimately hopeless.
Additionally, there’s so many things to understand, but they seem like impossible concepts to wrap your head around. For one, what are taxes and how do you pay them? What happens if you don’t pay them? DO YOU GO TO JAIL? How do you buy a house? How do you decorate a house? How long can you defer your student loan payments? How will you get up at 5 a.m. every morning to go to work? Listen, at this point in life, there’s no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking you up to see. Sleep is valuable. If a sunrise won't get you up in the morning, how on earth is a job going to?
Let’s be real. At the ripe age of 21, all you actually want to do is sit on the couch in your pj’s, eat some pizza, drink some wine and watch Netflix (I know I do). All of these future responsibilities do nothing to a person except make them sink further into the couch in which they were already stuck. This article is to let you know that it’s okay to be on the brink of real life and have literally no idea where you are headed. I mean, you can’t even choose a netflix show to binge watch because it requires too much attention and dedication. I get it. Adult life comes with extreme commitment, and real life takes away from your fun. It’s okay to not know what you want to do. Enjoy life day by day, and eventually (or so I hope) everything will fall into place. For now, relish being “stuck in limbo.”
