Let’s face it, 2016 was a rough year for everyone. From one of the craziest elections in history to the passing of multiple icons to the loss of everyone’s favorite gorilla, 2016 was a seemingly never-ending roller coaster of anything but fun. Thankfully, we've had multiple hilarious memes, blockbuster movies and epic music (thanks Beyoncé) to get us through it all.
2016 had a multitude of excellent movies covering a variety of different genres for everyone. From thriller The Girl on the Train to Disney’s newest princessMoana to Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War to Star Wars prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the hits just kept coming. 2017 looks just as promising with its mix of superhero movies, kid’s favorites, sequels and a slew of reboots. Here’s a month-by-month walkthrough of upcoming movies.
The beginning of 2017 is a mix consisting of last year’s later releases such as Rogue One, Moonlight and La La Land and new releases like the biographical drama Hidden Figures. The rest of January features a horror movie and one of the first sequels of the year. In The Bye Bye Man (Jan 13), discover the horrific origins of a dark entity named the Bye Bye Man, and must fight to stay alive and escape its curse. In XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage (Jan 20), Vin Diesel will reprise his iconic role as an extreme athlete-turned-superspy in the sequel to the 2005 hit.
February will see the releases of two sequel/spinoff movies. The first film, Rings (Feb 3), will spin a new twist onto the premise of the original film about a cursed VHS tape. Following that vein of a return to the original film is The Lego Batman Movie (Feb 10), a spinoff of 2014’s super fun animated adventure The Lego Movie. Will Arnett will reprise his role as the Caped Crusader who embarks on another crazy adventure to save Gotham City.
March marks the release of Disney’s newest live action film: the beloved tale of Beauty and the Beast. The all-star cast includes Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. The new take on the classic tale will premiere on March 17th.
A bit of a movie slump happens in April since no big blockbuster movies premiere for the duration of the month. There’s one prequel movie with Smurfs: The Lost Village (April 7th) about the beginnings of the Smurfs.
Thankfully, May comes in swinging with three major sequel movies. First up is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5) finds the team on a quest to find Star Lord AKA Peter Quill’s mysterious father. Next up is prequel/sequel combo Alien: Covenant (May 19), the newest installment in the Alien franchise. The film is both a prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien and a sequel to 2013’s Alien prequel Prometheus. The third sequel movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26), is the newest film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and the fifth overall.
June keeps the heavy-hitter trend going with two action movies and two kids movies. The first action movie is the hotly anticipated Wonder Woman (June 2) with Gal Gadot reprising her role as the greatest female superhero in her own standalone movie. Next action movie is part of another big film franchise. Transformers: The Last Knight (June 23), is the fourth Transformers film. “It's kind of like a new Transformers. We had three, the first trilogy, and this is going to be the next one. It's the first of a new trilogy. I'm not necessarily sure that I'm doing [the others], but that's what it's meant for,” Michael Bay said about the movie. The two kids movies are coincidentally both the third movie in their respective series. Cars 3 (June 16) and Despicable Me 3 (June 30) find the previous films’ beloved character embarking on all new adventures.
The trend of heavy-hitting movies continues into July as well, with a reboot and a third entry into another popular franchise. Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7) is the third Spider-Man reboot, with Tom Holland reprising his role as the web slinging hero. The second film is War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14), and as the title implies, is the about the epic battle between the humans and the apes for control of the planet.
As the summer winds down so do the action packed movies, and August is reflective of that. But just because the action is dialing down, doesn’t mean your heart won’t still be racing. Two horror movies will keep you on edge all month. First up is Annabelle 2 (Aug 11), the sequel to the unsettling story of the possessed doll that first appeared in James Wan’s The Conjuring. This second story involves a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and several orphans into their home but they all become the target of his possessed creation. The other unsettling film in August is Cadaver (Aug 25). The movie stars Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell and Castle’s Stana Katic in a story about an ex-cop who takes the graveyard shift at a local morgue and gets more than she bargained for.
The scares continue into September with the release of IT (Sept 8), the second movie adaptation of Stephen King’s famous novel of the same name. In this new update, Pennywise resurfaces and it is time for the now-adults of the “Losers Club” to regroup and battle again. But the scariest part of the movie? This is the first of two new movies about the novel. Spooky!
Now what would the month of October be without its scary movies? The chills and thrills are back once again, but this time with three movies. The action also returns in two sequels. In Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Oct 6), an attack on the Kingsman headquarters takes place and a new villain rises, forcing Eggsy and Merlin to team up with the American agency Statesman to save the world. Blade Runner 2049 (Oct 6) takes place thirty years after the original film and stars Ryan Gosling as the new blade runner Officer K who embarks on a quest to find missing former blade runner Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford. In terms of the three horror movies, very little is known about them, other than the fact that they’re the next installment in the series. Both Saw: Legacy and Insidious: Chapter 4 are from popular horror franchises, while Friday the 13this another remake of the classic film.
November is the month of the superhero with two big blockbusters from both of the major superhero franchises. On the Marvel side is Thor: Ragnarok (Nov 3), the third movie in the Thor series that is centered on Ragnarok, the Norse Apocalypse. On the DC side is the Marvel equivalent of The Avengers with Justice League (Nov 17). The film marks the second time Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s Superman will team up, but this time with a little help from Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and The Flash (Ezra Miller), along with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Another sure-fire hit in November is the second movie adaptation of Agatha Christie’s most famous novel Murder on the Orient Express. This new movie comes 43 years after the original movie adaptation.
Just like the last two years, it is December that holds the premiere of the most anticipated film of the whole year. This time the film is Star Wars Episode 8. The previous films were also Star Wars films, with 2015 having Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens and 2016 having Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The ultra-top-secret project has little to offer in terms of both title and plot but one thing is certain, the movie will feature everyone’s new favorite heroes Finn and Rey in a new galactic adventure. The film is set for a December 15th release.
Although 2016 was a huge disappointment to many people, the movies definitely made it less awful. There’s no telling what will happen during the year but hopefully the films of the new year won’t let us down.
