2015 has come and gone, and the new year has just been brought into the forefront of all world news. Whether you partied with friends or simply watched the ball drop with your mom, we're all excited to see what 2016 has in store for us.
As far as music goes, jam band enthusiasts can attest to the one of the greater revivals of this past year. Between Fare The Well and Dead and Company coming into play, there's been one component of the year that has to transition into a new sector of our resolutions.
That, my dear friends, would be the unbelievable shows brought to us by Phish.
Phish may be stereotyped for the Deadhead and college student, but the band originating from Vermont has amplified 2016 to all new heights. Known for their annual New Year's concerts at Madison Square Garden, Phish provided hours upon hours of jams this past week to ring in the new year with melody, style and "Weekapaug Groove."
Known amongst many, lead guitarist Trey Anastasio has been a key role in revitalizing the chemistry and soul that the band has been craving throughout the past 10 years. Being the final lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead this past summer, Anastasio was able to acquire a perspective on the songs that originally inspired him and his bandmates in the 1980s in a way unlike any other. With this in mind, the latter part of Phish's 2015 summer and fall tour proved to have energy most fans haven't seen since the 1990s (quite comparable to the Grateful Dead's "golden age" from the late 1980s to early '90s).
Any fan of the band can tell you that the members are true musical prodigies. Having all been music majors in college, they're insanely gifted in their craft, and often provide experimental sounds that most bands can't even fathom to bring into their repertoire. During some shows, the bandmates have even been known to rotate around the stage playing different instruments throughout songs!
One thing that Phish and other jam bands can pride themselves on is their insanely dedicated cult-like fanbase. Phish often provides wonderful jams throughout their setlists to bring a fresh sound to any song you may have heard at any of their hundreds of concerts.
Numerous live albums are provided through downloads or streaming for any newbie, along with broadcasting milestone shows such as those at MSG over the weekend. The crowd can be seen singing and dancing around the hourglass spectacle that filled up to "No Men in No Man's Land" is the clock struck midnight.
Even if you are not a fan of the jam band, rock-and-roll experience, this band can clearly bring a rare experience into one's life. If you're looking to dance with no judgement, and go to a concert that doesn't have an iPhone being held in front your face, I highly recommend "go to a Phish concert" as a New Years Resolution.
