20 Surprising Things Being In A Sorority Has Taught Me

In the years that we spend in college we learn many things. How to function in an 8 AM when you stayed up until 3 AM studying, the classification of rocks and minerals, or how to properly write in APA format. While these things are important, they won't be the things I think about years from now when I'm telling stories of my college days.

To people on the outside looking in, a sorority is a bunch of girls paying for fake friends and learning how to do a keg stand. See, that is where they are wrong. Being in a sorority has taught me so much about myself and those around me. My sisters are my shoulder to cry on and my lifeline.

Here are 20 things being in a sorority has taught me:

1. People are more than their stereotypes.

2. Sorority girls are not just rich girls who live off daddy's money and disrespect the rest of society. We are all different and have things that make us unique.

3. How to smile even when you're running off four coffees and three hours of sleep. (Thank you recruitment.)

4. It is so important in this world to support one another.

5. While first impressions are important, really get to know someone before you decide if you want them in your life or not.

6. How to network.

7. Your hard work will pay off in the end.

8. Make friends outside of your group of people or organization.

9. People get what they deserve in the long run.

10. Being a leader does not mean you can abuse your power. No one likes a dictator.

11. Don't use an excuse as a reason.

12. You are a role model.

13. Master the art of conversation with anyone and everyone. (Again, thank you recruitment.)

14. You can never be overdressed.

15. Better time management skills.

16. While cheers and chants make you feel awkward, you're somehow more alive than ever.

17. You'll be surprised at how much you actually do for even strangers.

18. Volunteer and philanthropy work is good for the soul.

19. Be passionate about even the little things in life.

20. There is a home for everyone!

I found my home as a freshman in college and I am not quite sure what I would do without these ladies in my life. So to my sisters, thank you for being you and allowing me to do just the same. Being in a sorority, or in Greek life in general, is so much more then it is made out to be. There is so much to be positive about and thankful for in the Greek community.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
