20 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Turned 18

1. Yes, school is actually important. While you won't use half of the things you learn in real life situations, it's no excuse to slack in your studies. You'll thank yourself later when you're getting fancy academic scholarships to college.

2. Treat yourself. You should never feel ashamed for taking a day to relax and feel good about yourself, and anyone that tells you otherwise can go to hell.

3. Just because someone else is beautiful doesn't mean that you aren't. Each woman is beautiful in her own special way.

4. Do not put other women down. Girls start petty catfights, women empower each other.

5. Your grades will NEVER come before your mental health. If you've been studying for a test for two hours and you feel yourself approaching a mental breakdown, close the textbook, get some ice cream, and relax. And if you fail the test, so what? You took care of yourself and that's what matters.

6. There's nothing wrong with asking for help.

7. Follow your dreams. Become a doctor, become an artist. Never let other people's opinions hinder you from being happy.

8. Your mom is your best friend. Sure, she can be lame, irritating, and 'uncool' at times, but she is the only person that always has and always will be there for you. And yes, your mother (sometimes) knows best.

9. Your dad is your best friend. He may be overprotective and also 'uncool' at times, but he's the one man that will be there for you no matter what.

10. Celebrate differences because, news flash, not everybody is like you. So acknowledge differences, but never let it come between a possible friendship.

11. Do volunteer work. It's for a good cause and is guaranteed to make you happy.

12. You need to be okay with yourself before you can be in a relationship with someone else.

13. Speaking of relationships, no boy is worth getting upset over. Not all boys are bad, but the vast majority of them are only looking for one thing. Just be aware of that.

14. As a woman, you are a force of nature. You were born to be strong and powerful despite what anybody has ever told you. Never forget that.

15. Explore the wonders of reading. Books are a gift, so use them.

16. Invest in pepper spray. Learn self-defense. It's a shame that these are things you should learn in order to feel safe, but it's the way it is.

17. Everything happens for a reason. It may not always seem that way, but I promise, everything will make sense someday.

18. You are a work of art. You will remain art long after everyone leaves.

19. No person could ever complete you. You were a complete person long before anyone else arrived, and the most anybody else can do is a compliment.

20. You need to love yourself, honey. You need to appreciate the person you are and the person you are becoming. You were born with power and strength coursing through your system. You are STRONG. You are BEAUTIFUL. You are LOVED.

Now go and give them hell.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
