All figure skaters share a common bond for the sport that comes with passion, dedication, and time. Along with these things come life long lessons and memories for years to come. Every figure skater we meet is like family, because we can relate to each other like no one else can. Here are just 20 things that every person with blades laced to their feet has experienced some time in their life.

1. Waking up at 4am to get to the rink before school, falling asleep, and having to wake yourself up real quick so your coach isn't mad.

2. Getting a spray tan for ice show or competition and instantly regretting it because you're orange.

3. Learning ice show routines like...

4. You hate when people ask to borrow your skating dresses.

5. Trying not to laugh at your coaches when they teach you new routines.

5. That feeling you get when you haven't skated in more than a week.

6. You hate when non-figure skaters ask you to do a trick. Your response is probably "I'm not a dog".

7. You know how to get super creative with your music choice and routine for the Christmas exhibition.

8. When you run into the boards it's a complete shock.

9. Toe Picks...

10. Your mom is most likely a stage mom whether you like it or not, and if she's not, your best friend's mom probably is.

11. That feeling when you nail your routine in competition.

12. The chance of "Ice Princess" being your favorite children's movie is very high.

13. You can never have too many Swarovski crystals and you envy anyone who has more than you.

14. You know how to do a perfect bun, but you can't forget the good old days of your mom sewing in hairpieces.

15. You and your skating friends have a special bond that no one really understands.

16. Never being able to go figure skating outside because it will ruin your skates.

17. The faces you make when someone wipes out during competition.

18. Waiting for results.

19. The feeling you get when you first land a new jump.

20. The last ice show every year is the saddest thing you experience as a skater.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
