Eat, Drink, Downtown South Bend

In South Bend, the sun hardly shines. The sky is gray, the air is cold, and it is depressing. Here are 20 places I'd rather be than South Bend this winter.

1. Maldives

Self explanatory. Look at that water! I'd like to stay in a little hut too, please.

2. Paris

Baguettes, crepes, macarons... the list goes on. The Eiffel Tower is cool, too.

3. London

I've been before, but I was 5. That doesn't count. I also didn't know any better and almost picked the flowers in front of the royal palace. It's fine.

4. Rome

I just want to be mistake for a pop-star like Lizzie McGuire was and sing "What Dreams Are Made Of" and expose another pop-star... please...

5. New York City

It's not any warmer, but I've wanted to go since I was young. They have literally everything that South Bend does not.

6. Hawaii

LITERALLY JUST TAKE ME ANYWHERE IN HAWAII I'VE WANTED TO GO SO BAD SINCE I WAS PROBABLY SIX.

7. Barcelona

A pretty big tourist attraction... I'd like to go to see what the hype is all about.

8. Grand Canyon

A cool place to go, unless you're scared of heights (like me). I'd still rather be deathly afraid in warm weather than in South Bend doing nothing in cold weather.

9. San Francisco

Three things: Chinatown, The Princess Diaries, and Full House.

10. New Delhi

The Indian culture is actually really great and they have good food... and incense. Which I like.

11. St. Maarten Island

Besides the crazy driving, I would love to go back. But in reality, any island in the Caribbean would suffice.

12. Seattle

I'm actually obsessed with Seattle for no good reason. It rains a lot, but I know it's still better than South Bend.

13. Indianapolis

Three hours south of South Bend and you're already in a better place. And they have Insomnia Cookies. We do not.

14. Tampa

My I-almost-went-here-for-college-town. It's also basically 80 degrees outside all. year.

15. Louisville

Having family in this area, I can tell you that Louisville tops South Bend any day. P.S. Wicks Pizza is awesome so if you go try it.

16. Atlanta

The most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen in my entire life, and Southern hospitality - something we do not have up North.

17. Nashville

Country music, aspiring artists, where Taylor Swift gained her fame, AND the Grand Ole Opry

18. South Padre Island

The only island in Texas, which has Whataburger, and my family's go-to vacation spot, I've learned to love this place.

19. Athens

Thank you to Rick Riordan for fueling my obsession with Greek god/goddesses through Percy Jackson at such a young age, and thank you to Philosophy and Socrates for making me even more curious about Athens.

20. Canada

Literally anywhere in Canada. Just take me to the land of hockey and maple syrup, please.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
