Consumerism is taking over society in this day and age. There is no real escape to this phenomenon. We live in a capitalistic society, and everything we could every want is obtainable with a simple Google search and a credit card. We are obsessed with buying the next piece of technology or keeping up with the latest trends. We are polluting the world around us and taking advantage of workers and consumers. The industrial world around us may seem big, bad and scary, but there are companies still out there that truly want to be benevolent. These 20 companies are good for the environment, their workers, and/or their consumers. If you shop responsibly, you can make a huge and positive impact on the world around you.

1. Taaluma Totes

This is a backpack line that uses traditional fabrics from various countries such as Guatemala, Indonesia and Mali. These fabrics are brought back to the U.S., where adults with disabilities are employed to sew the backpacks together. When a backpack is purchased, 20 percent of the profit is micro-loaned to farmers and small business owners in the country which that particular backpack's fabric is from.

2. Prosperity Candle

Every purchase of one of these hand-poured candles helps provide an equal and fair wage for a woman who has relocated to the United States from refugee camps. These candles help these women build better and brighter futures for themselves and their families. This company also supports women entrepreneurship in other countries as well, such as Haiti.

3. Beza Threads

This company has created a cycle that helps end child slavery In Ethiopia. The handmade scarves this company sells are made by former slaves and are sold in the U.S. to help spread awareness and maintain funds to support rescue efforts back in Ethiopia. When a child is freed, they are also educated and empowered.

4. Love Your Melon

This company is run by college students across the U.S. Their mission is to donate a hat to a child with cancer for every hat that is sold. The hats are donated in person by the college ambassadors dressed up as superheroes. This company has recently launched a new model where 50 percent of its proceeds will go to cancer research.

5. Out of Print

This company helps support and promote literacy. Each product sold donates a book to a community in need.

6. Toms

This company works with a one-for-one model. Each pair of shoes purchased provides a pair of shoes to a child in need. Purchases of their eye-wear provides exams, medical treatments and glasses to someone in need. Each bag of their coffee provides 140 liters of safe drinking water to a person in need. Furthermore, every backpack purchase helps provide training for school staff and crisis counselors to prevent and respond to bullying.

7. Faucet Face

This company sells glass, refillable water bottles. Through their proceeds, they donate BioSand water filters and money to areas in need of access to safe drinking water. Locals in India are employed to build the filters and to distribute them to families in need. they are also trying to spread awareness and end the harm caused by the production of plastic water bottles.

8. Hand in Hand

This company provides a bar of soap and a month's supply of clean water to a child in need with every product purchase. Their products are made with sustainable resources that are harvested ethically.

9. Twice as Warm

Every purchase of these products provides an item of clothing to someone in need. This clothing is made in the U.S. and is distributed to local shelters and organizations.

10. BeGood

This is a line of eco-friendly clothing. Conventional clothing production leads to water contamination. To help combat this, with every purchase, BeGood makes 12 gallons of clean water in rural areas where water contamination is common.

11. Bull + Moose

This company sells men's neck-wear and sponsors American veterans. They work with a program called "Got Your 6" which helps veterans adjust back to civilian life

Every box of Everly purchased provides life saving rehydration salts to treat kids with waterborne disease. Their products are also all natural and sugar free!

13. Humble Pen

These hand-crafted bamboo pens provide books, meals, pencils and notebooks to children in need. The pen itself is made by local artisans using sustainable bamboo. This company also supports local artists by using their works on their stationary.

14. Denik

These products range from notebooks, to greeting cards, to phone cases and display works from artists across the world. With every product sold, a portion of the proceeds goes to building schools and supporting artists.

15. Jonas Umbrellas

Every purchase of one of these umbrellas helps provide greater access to clean water around the world.

16. LUSH

This handmade cosmetic line fights against animal testing, uses fresh and natural ingredients, buys their ingredients ethically and gives back to many charities. They have a specific product called Charity Pot which donates 100 percent of their proceeds to support humanitarian, environmental and animal rights causes.

These bracelets are handcrafted by Costa Rican artisans. This company partners with over 190 charities and donate 1 percent of their annual proceeds to environmental organizations worldwide.

18. Rooted Beauty

This natural skincare line is eco-friendly and helps women around the world. This company works with the Woman2Woman Project that aids women to escape situations of extreme poverty and oppression. Every purchase helps fund a woman and provides her with vocational training, counseling and freedom.

Every bottle of vitamins purchased gives a bottle to a child in need. This company partners with Vitamin Angels to provide needed health care and vitamin treatments to children around the world.

20. Smile Squared

With every toothbrush this company sells, a toothbrush is donated to a child. Children throughout the U.S. and the world go without proper dental care which can result in many painful oral issues. This company wants to promote oral health in children which will put a smile on their faces. They also use sustainable bamboo for their toothbrushes which is eco-friendly!
