To my best friend's boyfriend,
I hope you know that you are easily the luckiest man in the world because you have the privilege of holding my best friend's heart in your hand. It is hard for me to admit, but sometimes she needs you way more than she needs me, but that's OK. I hope you know how much you mean to her.
She's been through a lot, so you had better treat her well. Tell her she's beautiful every time you see her. Send her good morning and good night texts. Surprise her with her favorite drink after class. You don't have to spend a fortune on her, but make her feel like the princess she is.
In case you haven't realized, she is probably the most incredible person that I know. She is so intelligent, compassionate, talented, funny, and trusting. She makes a bad day seem like nothing, and without her, I would be completely lost... but I'm realizing that you would be too.
You may have noticed that you've only spoken with me a handful of times, and maybe that's for the best. It's not that I don't like you, honest. It's just that I think she deserves the world. I don't know your intentions or how far you are willing to go to make her happy, I don't know your backstory or your life goals or where you see yourself in ten years. Hell, I don't even confidently know your major! That doesn't matter, though, because I see how happy you are making her.
You wouldn't believe how much she's grown since she met you. She's become more outgoing, more confident in herself. She is stronger, more driven, more determined. You are bringing out the best qualities in her, and for that, I am ever grateful.
On the flip side, you've also brought about some changes in her that I'm not too sure about. I'd like to think that I know everything there is to know about my best friend, but, the truth is I don't, and neither do you. Sometimes she gets really quiet because she's thinking too hard about the uncertainties of her future. She keeps the things she is most passionate about hidden in her heart because she is afraid of rejection. It kills her inside to think that she isn't good enough. This is where you come in.
As a best friend, I can only tell her she is perfect so many times before it falls empty on her ears. You are a different story. She seems to believe you in a way that is completely different from me, so you need to step it up. Ask her what scares her. Figure out the silly secrets she has, because, believe me, they are the best parts about her. Joke about the future you see together with her--you never know what the road ahead will turn into but who cares? Live in the moment with her.
You need to be there for her. I know your schedules are crazy, but make it work. Find a way to make her happy every day. Let her know you are thinking about her. Tell her everything is going to be okay, even if you aren't sure if it will. Do not take her for granted, because I can guarantee that she is the best thing that will ever happen to you.
So to my best friend's boyfriend, know that I will always be here in the background making sure that you are doing the right thing. Give her the love she deserves. Stop being scared of the future and simply enjoy her presence. You never know how much time you really have with someone, so do not take her for granted.
You aren't doing as bad as I like to say you are, so keep working hard. Maybe one day you'll find yourself completely in my good graces.
