19 Things To Do Before The Fall Semester Starts

Pack in the fun during these last few weeks.

19 Things To Do Before The Fall Semester Starts

Being a college student who will be a senior in the fall, I have only a few weeks left of my last summer as a student. It’s bittersweet for me. Part of me wants to got back to May and have summer all over again, and the other part wants the semester to hurry up and get here.

Here are some ideas of things to do before school starts back up, and you no longer have time to do anything besides work, go to class, and do homework.

1. Have a bonfire.

S’mores, hot dogs, and campfire smells? Can’t go wrong. Unless you set something on fire. Avoid that at all costs.

2. Read a book(at least one, if not more), cover to cover.

If you’re like me, you have a stack of books that you told yourself you would finish reading by the end of the summer, and you haven’t come close to that goal.

3. Actually MAKE one of the many dessert recipes you’ve pinned since you started using Pinterest.

Cookies, cupcakes, or maybe a milkshake? These monster cookie dough cupcakes sound delicious.

4. Get some sleep.

Sleep in as much as you can, because soon the 9:25 (or earlier) classes will start and you will wish you had more time to get some rest.

5. Chop off your hair!

Or get a trim to keep it nice and healthy. Its your call.

6. Go mini golfing.

It’s way easier and cheaper than regular golfing, but you still look bad when you make the shot and end up 3 strokes over par. It’s fun to pretend that you’re good at it, though!

7. Try out a new drink at your favorite coffee shop.

If you feel inspired, try making up your own coffee drink at home!

8. Run through the sprinkler!

Summer temperatures get hot enough to make you feel like you’re melting, so put on your swimsuit and cool off. It’s also a good way to reminisce a popular childhood pastime if you don’t have a swimming pool or access to one.

9. Hit up the local thrift shop.

Look for sweaters and jeans, and other fall apparel for less. I’ve found new and like new clothing, sometimes even clothes that still have the tags at Goodwill. Look for board games there too! Way cheaper than a department store’s prices on clothes and games. More for less is always best!

10. Buy concert tickets for a concert during the school year.

You’ll have something to look forward to, and that will give you motivation to work toward a certain date.

11. Get crafty!

My favorite thing to do is sit down with some gel pens and an adult coloring book, while watching a movie. Browse DIY crafts on Pinterest if you need some inspiration.

12. Make pizza from scratch instead of getting it delivered.

Yeah, it will take longer and make more dishes that will need to be washed, but it the satisfaction of homemade pizza will make up for the extra effort.

13. Binge-watch a season (or two) on Netflix (or Hulu, because we’re not biased here).

Whether it be a show your coworker recommended to you, a show that you’ve seen countless times, or a movie that you’ve wanted to see for a long time, it will be great. Grab some popcorn and theater candy for a less expensive movie night! I'll recommend a couple Netflix originals, "Stranger Things", and both seasons of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". Both shows are excellent for binge-watching.

14. Cornhole tourney!

Get a group of friends together and head to the park or someone’s backyard. Draw names for teams, and test each others’ bean bag tossing skills. Make it a picnic by asking everyone to bring a dish to pass and lawn chairs or blankets.

15. Go for a walk.

Around the block, or through the park. Both can get you moving, and if you’re a Pokemon GO player, you can hatch some eggs at the same time!

16. Two words: Ice cream.

Go to your favorite ice cream shop and order your usual. My favorite is a cookie dough flurry! Soon it will be too cold for ice cream and you’ll need hot cocoa to keep you warm.

17. Go tubing (or paddle boating) on a lake, one last time.

Staying cool while getting my last tan on is fine by me!

18. Decide how you will decorate your dorm room or apartment this year.

Pinterest always helps me out when I don’t know what color scheme to pick.

19. Make a Fall 2016 / Study Buddy / focus playlist on Spotify.

It will be your best friend when you’re struggling to get homework done.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
